The R-rated laffer's lighter-than-expected weekend tally allowed Warner Bros. "The Dark Knight" to top domestic rankings for an incredible 4th straight weekend, with the Batman sequel fetching another $26 million to pump cume to $441.5 million.
"Dark Knight" blew passed the $437 million performance of 2004's "Shrek II" this weekend to become the 3rd biggest movie grosser ever, behind 1977's "Star Wars" ($461 million).
-
inflation?
-
yeah, they said it would need to make 1.2 billion to pass Star wars in tickets sold
-
$441.5 Million is still more impressive since in 1977 there was no internet, no online poker, no NFL Network, no satellite television and no movies on demand. I am impressed. This movie was so good.
2008 Best Picture of the Year -
lol, did you forget that there's also 100 MILLION MORE people in America
-
It will win People's Choice and MTV awards for best picture, but it won't win the Oscar. Movies that come out towards the end of the year win those.
-
MTV Awards, LoL. Didn't TRANSFORMERS win "Best Movie Yet To Come Out" last year? Geez. On a sidenote, I like popcorn though.
-
star wars was also rereleased to add to the ticket sales to an entirely new generation.
-
damn how did star wars make that much back then, numbers are jaw dropping
-
Gone With the Wind is such a damn good movie. I wonder what you youngins would think if you watched it. Can't imagine more than a few under-30 OT'er's have seen it
-
IMO it'll beat Titanic
It should be in theatres for a while yet -
I was under the impression that Titanic was the number 1 grossing movie of all time? If Batman could have shown 1 breast just like titanic and managed to be rated PG-13 it probably would have hit like 1-2 billion imo.
-
wanna bet
$100 it doesn't -
13 of top 20 since 1999 when movie tickets became god damn rediculous in price
-
I can answer that for us old timers. Star Wars came out in May and it just plain dominated the entire summer. It basically invented the summer blockbuster that we take for granted now. (Jaws in 1975 could be given credit as well.) I remember seeing a story on the news about some kid who had seen it 21 times. It was just amazing. It seemed like every single kid at school was into it. All I wanted to do was fly in a spaceship.
-
LoL...wtf does this mean? You were in your prime during the 30s and the other "youngins" might not grasp the film?
-
The Dark Knight will gross more money at the box office than Star Wars, but it will still end up being $100 million+ short of Titanic. There probably wont ever be a movie that grosses more than Titanic.
Also, as already stated, stars Wars was rereleased in the late 90s and that added a shitload more money to its box office gross. -
it was a good movie, but wtf best picture?
-
If batman was somehow rated pg-13 it would have already shattered the record IMO and still be sold out every single night.

i have seen all but 5 and 8 and i guess you could include 10 cause i was about 5 when i saw it. you're an asshole if you think any of those movies are better than the dark knight, which is not even close to my favorite movie of all time, but much better than all of those. a preemptive fuck you to all the nostalgia assholes who are going to pump gone with the wind. yes, my critique is going to revolve around it being slow.

If I remember right about Titanic though, it dominated for some 5-6 weeks right out of the gate, then was #2-#3 for a few weeks, then actually came back in the summer and was number 1 again for another 3 weeks. Titanic had an epic run during its summer. Dark Knight has taken the first part of the run, but lets see if we're still talking about it in September-October. Titanic was also more amazing being 3.5 hours, so not only did you have to invest a ton of time to see it, but you got significanlty less screenings per day (per screen) than you do a typical movie.
-
Titanic came out in like November/December. It was probably out of theaters by summer time. It was popular with the old crowd, you know.. people who actually remember the real Titanic.
Regards to all time money lists, you have to adjust for competition at theaters, blockbuster, hollywood video, internet and TV... this all adds up to The Dark Knight being the #1 grossing movie of all time. There were no other movies playing back in 1939, so if you went to the theater, you were forced to watch Gone with the Wind.
