Day Z is a mod for Arma 2, a military fps/simulator. The mod itself is free but you have to have Arma 2 and one of its DLCs. You can find all the info/cost etc with a google search.

Some people have called this game a fps, or even a mmofps. But I think its more accurately described as a zombie apocalypse survival sim.

You start off in one of a few spawn areas with a backpack, some basic medical supplies, and a flashlight. You are in a giant sandbox world (225 squared km scaled), where everyone is a potential threat. There are hundreds of zombies roaming around, and tons of other players. And every single one of them is (most likely) going to try to kill you.

Let me clarify: I am a huge COD zombies fan, but this is nothing like that. This is a stealth/survival game. If you try to run and gun, you are not going to survive for very long. At the beginning you have no weapon and no melee attack. You are basically helpless until you start finding weapons, so you have to creep around and stay out of sight. The zombies are fast and unpredictable. If they spot you, they will follow you indefinitely until you kill them, or lose them. But that's just the beginning, you have to collect food and drink to stay fed and hydrated, or you will die. You have to collect various medical supplies, or disease or injury could kill you. And to top it all off, every single other player is potentially a deadly threat.

There is no friendly fire in this game. In fact there is not much that is friendly at all. You get to decide how you interact with other people. Some people might team up with you and help. Some might shoot you instantly on sight. Some might help you until they earn your trust and then execute you as soon as your back is turned, just to steal all your shit. There are highly organized squads of dudes who roll around murdering everyone in their path. For example:



This game is brutal and unforgiving. When you die, you lose all your shit and start all over. You may have been playing for hours upon hours, and carefully collected all the best guns and equipment, and in an instant it could all end. The level of realism is ridiculous. The time of day is based on the location of the server you play on, and progresses in real time. At night its dark as shit and unless you have night vision goggles you are going to die. The sun rises and sets, the moon and stars are mapped with some degree of realism, so you can find the north star and figure out which way is north.

In short, this game is ridic. Its a bit demanding on your computer, you should make sure your pc meets the requirements before getting it. I wouldnt recommend trying to play this on a laptop, unless its a gaming laptop. I have an alienware laptop that is only 1 yr old and I had to tweak the shit out of my settings to even get a steady 20-30 fps.

there is a shit ton of aimless running around until you start learning the map. once you figure out how to get to lootable buildings fairly quickly it gets a lot less tedious

There's a lot of glitches and wall exploits and I heard rumors the developers are assholes, but potentially awesome game.

damn, I need a gaming PC. I would probably spend way too much time playing this though.

yeah it was hacking that was going on, a post from r/dayz was on the front page a couple of weeks ago and it was related to some dbag causing some shit on a server

i'll post the requirements in a few when i have more time, but if in doubt, do not buy arma 2 and d/l this yet, especially if you are on a laptop. dont want anyone to waste money if it will be unplayable

game looks incredible, great idea...I hope they use this idea to make a real mmo style game out of it

paid about 30 bucks i think. took a few hours to DL both Arma2 and the Operation whatever it is. then followed the youtube instructions to DL DayZ mod and install it all.
