Derek Jeter just passed HOF Luis Aparicio as the all time hit leader for shortstops. I can remember about a year ago a poll was conducted that said Jeter was considered as one of baseballs' Most Overrated Player. Really? Who was conducting this poll? The Boston Red Sox? Jeter is definitely a first ballot hall of famer. Not to mention at the same age as Pete Rose, the all time hit leader, he is matching him hit for hit(that's not to say that he is going to catch Rose).
-
Overrated? possibly
1st ballot HOF? yes -
1st ballot? yes
over rated? no, he's damn good. just think people find it fun to hate on him cause he's not a power hitter and gets a lot of T.V. time. -
Enough with the overrated already, been a top 5 SS in the MLB essentially his whole career. Having an excellent offensive season and his defense has been adequate.....Not to mention the little things he does in every game..Underrated IMO
-
i'm a yankee fan and love jeter...not that i agree at all, but peoples reasoning for why he's overrated as far as i've heard is he doesn't show fight and enthusiasm and his defense is overrated..again, not agreeing with this, but this is what i've gotten out of yankeehater debates
-
The only people that think Jeter is overrated are uninformed and/or unintelligent and/or Yankee-hating fans.
-
LOL, sorry..obv NYM 1st all the way, but the yankees are my fav AL team...i'm not a jealous mets homer who hates on the yanks, though i do hate on the obnoxious fans who give me shit 24/7 for "yet another collapse" ignorant fucks
-
he clinched 1st ballot hof 8 years ago
-
i know a lot of ppl round here who hateeeee the yanks and i don't think any of them would disagree that he's a 1st ballot HOF..doubt sox fans could honestly say this....it's like if manny didn't end up being dirty, even though he's top 5 most hated players for me (actually #1) i couldn't have disagreed honestly that he's overrated and not HOF material
-
Arod was a better SS.

Hey, what happen to the list of all the women that Jeter dated? That was nice.

1st Ballot Hall of Famer? Yes
Overrated? Yes
Not even the best Shortstop on his own side of the infield
DEREK JETER WINS GAME WITH WALK-OFF INTANGIBLE
Derek Jeter led the Yankees to an exciting, come-from-behind victory over the Orioles last night with a dramatic, walk-off, bases loaded intangible. It was the shortstops 1,148thcareer game-winning intangible, extending his major league record.
Jeter came to the plate against Baltimore closer Chris Ray in the bottom of the ninth inning with the bases loaded, two outs and the Yankees trailing 6-3. But seconds later his unmatched intangibles cleared the bases and had New York celebrating an exciting win before a roaring home crowd.
It was amazing to see, said recent Yankees acquisition Bobby Abreu. Ive long heard about Jeters intangibles and how his true worth cant be measured by his somewhat pedestrian numbers, but this is the first time I witnessed it with my own eyes. Its still unclear to me exactly what happened. I remember him going up to the plate. There was maybe a pitch or two and then a great flash of light shot out of him and filled the sky. Then the next thing I knew everyone was celebrating at home plate. It was totally surreal. But great, because we really needed the win.
Baltimores Ray said all he can do is tip is cap to Jeter and try to get him next time.
When a guy with the unmatched intangibles that he has comes up, youre kind of at their mercy, said Ray. I did my best, but his intangibles won out.
Yankees manager Joe Torre said last nights walk-off intangible is just the latest example of why he wouldnt trade Jeter for any other player in baseball.
Dereks detractors will point out the fact that he doesnt have much power. Or that he strikes out too much. Or that he has limited range at shortstop and a mediocre throwing arm, said Torre. But its the intangibles that set him apart from every other player in baseball. The intangibles. What those are exactly I cant say. Its kind of tough to put your finger on. But its something. And that something somehow won the game for us tonight.
Jeters teammate, Alex Rodriguez, says he wishes he could one day come through with a walk-off intangible at Yankee Stadium.
I was the MVP of the entire American League last year and even though my numbers are way down this year, theyll still dwarf anything Derek has ever put up, said Rodriguez. Yet its not enough for people, and I know that. They want championships here in New York and in order to get championships you need players with intangibles whatever they might be and however it is that you go about displaying them. If we could have a lineup full of Derek Jeters, we wouldnt have a single guy with more than 20 home runs or 80 RBI, but wed be working on eight-straight championships. Thats a given. -
Jeter's average season, 1996-2001:
.320 avg, 16.5 HR, 80 RBI, .393 OBP, 22.5 SB
Garicaparra's average season, 1997-2000,2002-2003 (injured 2001):
.324 avg, 27.5 HR, 107.5 RBI, .376 OBP, 12.8 SB
Very comparable numbers. Did Nomar clinch 1st ballot 8 years ago as well? I have no doubt Jeter will be in on the first ballot, and as much as I don't like him he deserves to be, but to say that he had it locked up in 2001 is either greatly exaggerating or crazy. If his career went down the shitter like Garciaparra's did, the voters wouldn't look back on his first 6 years and think that's enough to get in. -
I still think giambi was safe at home
-
Does nomar have 4 world series rings?

get back to me when he does. -
1. I am not making a case for Nomar to be in the hall of fame. He does not deserve to be.
2. Posada, Pettitte and Bernie all have 4 rings as well. Should they be in the HOF, and if so, 1st ballot?
2a. Robert Horry has 7 NBA Championship Rings. 1st ballot?
3. The point of my post is that Jeter had not done enough in his first 6 years to make the HOF. If his career were to end today, he would be 1st ballot. If it ended in 2001, he would be one of the all-time woulda shoulda coulda's on the outside of the HOF looking in. -
Are there any players in MLB history that played for 6 seasons and made the HOF?
He's a HOFer, no question about it. -
Nomar is pretty much the poster boy for steroids given how his career has gone... well maybe behind Brett Boone.

I am a national league nut swinger and a die hard cards fan. I pray for the 2009 world series being yankees/cardinals.
That being said, anyone who does not think Derek Jeter is THE YANKEE and a gentleman and a first ballot hall of famer is a fool. He has handled himself like a prince of New York.
Go Derek. Join the greats like Ozzie. Pee Wee Reese. Oh yea. and Honus Wagner. -
2a. Robert Horry has 7 NBA Championship Rings. 1st ballot?
Yes, yes he does. -
Would you say Griffey took them also? Since leaving Seattle, he missed 51 games in 2001, 92 games in 2002, 109 games in 2003, and 79 games in 2004. At what point does someone who is plagued with injuries become someone to point the steriod finger at? I'd like to believe neither of them juiced, but at this point there is nothing that would surprise me as far as PEDs go.
