Does anybody here think Devin Hester makes the Hall of Fame simply for his punt and kickoff return skills? Was having this conversation with somebody earlier today, after watching some highlights and watching sports center. I really don't know the answer.
Thoughts? -
No, if he gets in it opens the flood gates for a slew of punt return/kickoff return guys to get it and waters down the HOF.
-
If he stopped playing today? No. If he does what he's doing for 5 more years? Meh... Maybe?
-
I really don't think so.
-
If Devin Hester gets in, then Steve Tasker has to get in
-
Why not wait until his career is over for this topic. You will need to look at just how high he set the bar for the kick return record before this question can be justly answered.

idk about this tho...pretty sure Hester is the GOAT wrt returning kicks, not like if you let him in you instantly have to let in every flavor of the month kick returner.
I'd say if he can keep this up for several more years he's certainly worthy of serious consideration -

Cliffs: No special teamer deserves HOF status. But if anyone does, it's Devin Fn Hester. -
If Brian Mitchell didnt get in before Hester became a Star, i doubt Hester gets in.

Brian Keith Mitchell (born August 18, 1968) is a former American football running back and return specialist in the National Football League. He was originally drafted by the Washington Redskins in the fifth round (130th overall) of the 1990 NFL Draft. He played college football at University of Southwestern Louisiana where he was a quarterback.
Mitchell also played for the Philadelphia Eagles and the New York Giants. He is currently second on the NFL's all-time list in all-purpose yardage with 23,330 yards, behind Jerry Rice. His 13 special teams touchdowns are second in NFL history, behind Devin Hester, and his nine punt return touchdowns are third behind Eric Metcalf with 10, and Hester with 11. Mitchell was ranked the 2nd Greatest specialist in NFL History by NFL Network's NFL Top 10 Return Aces.
He is also one of only four players to record four seasons of over 2,000 total yards, (the others being Marshall Faulk, Dante Hall and Tiki Barber) and missed out on a fifth by only five yards -
If he can finish his career with 8.5k return yards, 25 return tds, 5.5k recieving yrds, and 25 recieving tds he'll def have an argument. Imo it will still be a bit short, but will def be a sick career.

As a Bears fan I still say no, but if he figures out how to run a decent route as a WR and does some damage there as well as keep his pace up on returns, anything is possible, but I doubt it on all counts
-
If when all is said and done and he has say double or even a little less than twice the returns of second place he's going to be ahead by such a high margin I doubt it opens any flood gates for other special teams players, it would just be universally accepted that he was let in as an exception.

I agree that Hester is the best in the business today, there are a handfull of players that are right behind him in terms of being at his level. Unless Hester is returning 10 punts and kicks a year for TD's there is 0 chance he gets into the HOF.

hester is the reason the bears have made the superbowl/nfc championship. you could argue defense but nahh, hester is the reason. one of the questions for the criteria is "can you write the history of the nfl without including him?"
he will continue to score and he will get in and people who were around to see it will look back with fond memories of his greatness

Vinatieri is in now and I think Hester will be by the time he is through. There's 2 special teamers for ya.
-
He's the best ever at his position and his position is exciting as hell, why not?
-
Hester is just not a wr, no other way to put it. He is fast as fuck and the Bears have for years looked for a way to get him on the field to make a difference.
-
I say yes because no one will ever break any of his records and if you base it off of position then definitely.
-
^^^being the best at your position is def. an argument to get in. I know his ability to be exciting every time he gets the ball from a punt/ko isn't a category for the HOF, but if you were creating the best team you could across all the ages, i'm taking hester to return punts/ko's, which for me, puts him into the HOF
-
You kinda just made the arguement that Hester should be in, and Brian Mitchell shouldnt.

No, seriously, there's no chance he gets in.
-
i mean patrick peterson has 4 punt return TDs already and he's been playing in the NFL for like three months
