Hi all,
I discovered that Dexter was based on a book and purchased it.
Am I the only one who thinks the series was more entertaining/better written than the books here?
Curious for others opinions. -
Haven't read the book and I've only seen the first episode of the TV series (which is awesome) but there's no way the series is better than the book. The biggest reason is that it's so hard to pull off the "thinking aloud" on TV -- it's always done better on paper. Of course, I'm just making an assumption based on the first episode that Darkly Dreaming Dexter has a lot MORE of Dexter's thoughts than the TV show does, which probably makes it stronger.

The TV show and the books diverge pretty significantly after the first book.
I've thought about this quite a bit, because i'm almost always on the "Book was better" side. (exception Shawshank Redemption... but that was a novella)
I think their is a lot more (admittedly contrived) content in the TV show.
The book doesn't take 10 hours to read, and the first season is 12 40+ min episodes.
In 3 books Cold Logical Dexter makes almost no Cold Logical Kills, being pushed to emotion (then ancient religion... ugh)
The books just left me disappointed, somehting I cant say about either series of the tv show. -
like bubba, i have not read the book. i had a very different reaction to your post, though. that reaction was: fucking thank you. i fucking hate it when people bring up a movie/show and someone always has to chime in "oh the book was better" you know what jackass, i dont give a shit, i drink, text message, go on facebook, i don't have time to read shit thats already in movie/tv form. saying the book is better does not make you an intellectual. has there never been an instance where the movie is better than the book? is the film medium so limited that it can't at least reproduce a book?
this was not directed at you bubba at all, btw. just replied to you cause you also hadn't read the book. as for the thinking aloud, i never saw it as a problem during the series. i suppose its smoother on paper, but i don't think thats a major fault. -
I know the post wasn't directed at me, but I still feel like I have to address it. No one makes fun of you or puts you down because you haven't read the books, so why do you have to get so mad? People don't just chime in a say the book is better as a hobby-- it's generally because the book IS usually better. Is the book ALWAYS better? Probably not, but I'd say about 90% of the time it most definitely is.
And for the record, I wasn't saying I have a problem with Dexter's thinking aloud in the show, I'm just saying they probably had to cut A LOT of the thinking from the books because in the books he may ramble on for two minutes in his own head, but it just isn't feasible to have him do that for two minutes onscreen. I just in general, books are more detail and the trouble with adapting them to film is that there's a stigma that any film over two hours is "too long." -
I love that sign. I should read the books, but the show owns obv

I have read the books...and I like the TV series better. You are right about the thoughts...but on the TV series they do a great job getting inside of his head...its not like the way you are describing it Bubba. The books are good, but I didn't have the feeling that I couldn't put them down like I had the feeling that I couldn't wait until Sunday evening.
P.S. The plot of the books are different from the TV series. -
my post was half-joking. I don't have some inferiorty complex over it, and I don't hate that much.
i've read a few (read: 2) books that were made into movies, and I did actually think the books were better. I always took the difference as if you like a book, its a 2 week experience as opposed to if you like a movie its a 2 hour experience. Maybe that's simplistic, but I really think that is the main reason why people like the books more than movies. The hatred that came out in my post, again half-joking, was the people that are so proud to say they read the book and automatically shoot down the movie/show. I think of it like people that liked some band before they became famous and then always say how they were so much better before they got that record deal. that shits annoying.
i didn't totally see what you're saying about the thinking to himself thing, but I agree with you, you can't do as much of that in film as you can in a book. -
i dont give a shit, i drink, text message, go on facebook, i don't have time to read shit thats already in movie/tv form.
that's a fucking awesome sentence imo -
change thread immed to "dexter tv series vs dexter the book series vs dextercain" and i might be willing to comment on the subject
