Long time listener, first time caller, glad to be on the show....
I have recently purchased my first home, and will be outfitting the the man room with a suitable large TV....
From my research i have created these restraints:
50"+
120+ hz... i had never noticed on my bedroom 37" 720p/60hz the scrolling 'blurring' but i guess it is there, and thus Hz seems a useful metric in analyzing these things...
Mitsubishi has come out with a new series of DLP that come in
60" - 1k
65 - 1.3 or 1.7k
73 - 2.4k
82 - 4.4k
These are pretty cheap as compared to LCD/plasma equivilents, and the picture seems pretty good... While i'd like to spend <2k, i basically want the best bang for the buck...
The bad part is that from my research, DLP's have a lamp that goes out in 3-5 years that needs to be replaced... from $200-500 depending on which lamp it is...
Anyone with any experience or tv recommendations? Thanks -
You get what you pay for, I would go with a higher quality LCD like a Sony. You're going to pay a little more, but it will be worth it.
-
I just used Sony as an example, I have a Sony Bravia and I love it. Never had any problems, and the picture is super clear, and I've had it for almost 3 years.

There may be other brands that make better LCD's, I was just saying you are better off buying higher quality and paying a little more for it. -
true, but the idea of a 73" screen is enticing... 82 is a ripoff... Thats almost lifesize porn on the tv...

agreed a solid 52" LCD is probably the most +ev... -
DLP's are absolute junk. Right now I'd have to think a samsung LED is the best option. go to Best Buy .com and you can find something around 50-55 inches for 2-3k.
-
I had a mitsu 57in dlp, and it was a big pile of crap. In the two years I owned the tv I went through two lamps that were about 250 a piece. Also the standard tv on a big screen tv looks like absolute crap.
but as someone said before, you get what you pay for. -
I would spend the money and get the LED.

Samsung PN50B650
CR's Take
This 50-inch 1080p plasma set from Samsung, like its 58-inch sibling, is a top-notch performer, among the best TVs we've tested, and a CR Best Buy. It offers excellent picture quality, a great menu system and remote. It is one of the new Internet-enabled TVs with various data services, such as Samsung's Medi@2.0 Internet service, which uses Yahoo widgets to access Internet content.
Samsung PN50B650 50-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV $1,139.00 Free Shipping
Then spend the balance of your $2k budget on a good sound system. -
If you're not going LED then Samsung LCD ftw
-
i had 1 70+ miti dlp cause it was cheapest..
after a week took it back and traded for a slightly smaller samsung dlp..pic is like 30% better...if you cant pay extra for led type then samsung dlp is wtg -
Like others have said, you get what you pay for.
DLPs are garbage if you're not sitting directly in front of the TV. Also, if you're not watching an HD channel, DLPs just look way too fuzzy. For these reasons, I would suggest and LCD/LED TV instead. I got a 46" Samsung LCD and love it.
However, I have a buddy that works for TigerDirect, and he can get me this beauty for $1300. I'm trying to find ways to tell myself I don't need it: 46" Samsung LED -
Thanks for the advice, you guys rock... Plasma deal for 1100 just 3-bet the Mitsu 1k dlp.... mitsu tanks and folds....

I sell TVs. Pm me with questions. Monkeys on point. I personally have this tv and as far as I know, it is being clearanced so they will be dropping the price and being harder to get. This is potentially the best bang for your buck. Second to the top of the line Samsung plasma for less than 1200 dollars.

I have mine hooked up to my HD DVR and PS3 with Monster 1000 HDMI cables and the picture is amazing. Thats without the tv being calibrated yet. -
I recently purchased this TV from Best Buy + a Blu-Ray player for $1130. Easily the best value I could find.
