dip,
I see what your saying. Religious people may tend to be worse poker players precisely because so many religous people are also anti-science (which would cause them to reject the realities of odds, variance, expected value, etc.)
That being said, there are exceptions. I believe in God but I also am a rational thinker and a pragmatist which makes me an ok poker player. Just because you beleive in God doesn't mean you can't be a good player. But I see where youre comming from. -
God is like the great teachers of poker...he tries to teach you self discipline in those places where you're discipline is most likely to break down...

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=2 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD>"I do not beleive in god for several reasons. The most prominate reason is that I find the whole idea of god rather unrealistic."
</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
This cracks me up.
We live on a tiny little planet that orbits a star located in the middle of a vastness we can't comprehend. We really don't know very much about anything, except that we are here, not sure how we got here. We have approximately 5 senses, one of them being sight, with a visual spectrum of around a dozen colors maybe.
In other words, we don't see all that much. If something ever taps you on the shoulder that you can't see, that whole notion of God, or a higher power, being "unrealistic" goes right out the window.
A word of caution, never ever ask for proof, you just might get it. -
Yes, please move this. Big mistake opening this can of worms.

"The reason I ask is because I have been regularly playing in a live game that is full of v. religious people. And they act so illogically - making stupidly -EV plays (that they know are -EV) and say stuff like "come on god!" before turns/rivers." - Surprised these are religious people...there's an old saying it goes something along these lines "The Lord helps those who help themselves"...success at poker takes a lot of work and a God who answered to push button requests wouldn't be God...
I find Truman Capote's quote interesting: "More tears are shed over answered prayers than unanswered ones" -
saw this in a book describing science and religion
ask a quantum physisist what creates the world he says energy, what is energy?
It can never be created or destroyed, it always was, always has been, everything that existed always exists, it's moving into form, through form and out of form.
ask a theologen what creates the world he says God, what is God
He can never be created or destroyed, HE always was, always has been, He that existed always exists, He's moving into form, throughform and out of form.
Seems to me science and religion think the same, just different terminology. Play poker man -
apparently the lord and poker go together just ask jerry yang. seems the lord doesnt like the waving of flags prematurely though.
