  1. I know it's only the first week of baseball, but this trade was proposed to me...I'm kind of interested but was wondering what others thought.

I get Jim Thome and A.J. Burnett....I give up Prince Fielder.

I am expecting Prince to fall off of his 50 homers last year, probably somewhere in the ballpark of 35....Which would put him at about the same level as Thome. Both hit for the same average, and neither steals bases.....

Here are my pitchers I already have to help you evaluate this trade.

    SP Rich Hill

    SP Matt Cain

    SP Derek Lowe

    SP Brian Bannister

    RP Jose Velvarde

    RP Eric Gagne

    RP Carlos Marmol

    RP Kevin Gregg

    RP Brad Lidge
  2. Fielder >>>>> Thome

But, if you are going to make the trade, you might as well throw Gagne in with Fielder so you at least get something out of it.
  3. I wouldn't accept that trade especially this early in the season. Thome may or may not have a big year, and Fielder will most likely have another big year, and you already have solid pitching. Hold off on that trade imo.
  4. Do you really think my pitching is solid? I'm worried about relying on Hill and Cain to have breakout years....Not that relying on Burnett is any better in the least....We all know he has a horrible track record of staying healthy..

What about sophomore slump for Fielder? Thome is definitely one of if not the most consistent slugger over the last 10-15 years.....Other then 3 years ago when he was hurt.

    Thanks for the input.

  5. Now that I think about it, you could probably use another good solid pitcher, but you have a lot of closers that you could possibly use to trade for another starter.

Fielder could have a sophmore slump, but I doubt it, he was great last year, and I would expect the same from him this year.

Thome has been a consistent slugger for quite a while, but he didn't have a very good year last year and he was battling injuries all year, so he is more of question mark.

I would give up Burnett and Thome for Fielder, but not the other way around.
  6. Horrible trade

  7. Do not make this trade! Thome and Burnett are bound to get hurt this year. It's science. You can go get and get pitching help somewhere else, free agents or a smaller trade, since you really need it. Fielder is a beast and won't fall off that much...I'm thinking 40-45 Hr's. Thome started off hot but hes old and will break down. Burnett has a history of injuries.
  8. I'm leaning towards not taking the deal.....I don't think it is as bad of a trade as a couple of you have said....But the lack of flexibility with Thome concerns me....He only qualifies at Utility position. As it is now I have three guys that qualify for 1st base. Berkman, Fielder and C. Guillen. I think at the end of the year this trade could help me especially if Burnett finally has a year where he posts 15+ wins. But I guess it is too early to do the trade.....Ugh hope I don't regret this.

  9. NO
  10. i say no to this trade. i think fielder will go off just as much as last year just because of his contract issues from off season. hes going to show how much of a beast he is, and how hes only getting paid so little money. aj burnett hasnt been reliable for a while. i like him too, but now, i just dont count on him to have a full healthy season. dont do this trade.
  11. I have to agree with everyone else, if you really think Prince is going to have a down year you can get better value than this.

  12. I wouldn't take this trade. Fielder is not going to have a down year. You need to do something about that pitching staff though. It looks like you have a few everyday players on your bench. With so few offdays in baseball you need less everyday players on the bench and more starters. I don't see the point of having Marmol unless you are doing it just for the simple fact that he's probably next in line for the closer role when Wood's arm falls off again.
  13. You could definitely use Burnett because your pitching is pretty suspect, but there's no way Fielder doesn't hit at least 40 HR's with his power and that joke of a ballpark he plays in. No deal sir.
  14. no deal as listed. please accept anything, a wastepaper basket, an old banana peel, n00dz of Bea Arthur, for roid-ragin' Eric Gagne. that is all.
  15. It seems a little eary to be making any trades unless you have a very good idea of projecting way above/below others in a couple of categories, and could get an early jump on fixing the problem, and generally it would be best to wait til about a month in to really see what areas you need to address and/or which ones you look to have a surplus of goodness in. My personal opinion is that Prince is borerdline 1st Round talent, and HR aside, he will most likely score a fairly significant amount more Runs, have a few more RBI, and I definitely disagree with your AVG assesment, Prince has the potential to hit upper .200's. He will even get you 5-10 SB, and all of these perceived small differences could be huge if your in a fairly competitive league. That said, there are always different ways to look at things, and blinding oneself to alternatives based on "obvious" decisions isn't the way to go.

In looking at your pitchers, you are A) in a fairly deep league, B) have a shitload of offense, or C) won't be featured on VH1's Best Drafts Ever. If it is A), I'd hang tight for a little while, it's a long season, no need to make any high variance decisions 4 days into the season. If C), I'd say follow your gut, it isn't a horrible trade by any means and maybe you need to take an early gamble to put yourself back into a competitive position, so do whatever YOU feel comfortable with.

If B) is the scenario, I would look at it from the perspective of your batters. How much power, and overall contribution, can you afford to give up? I agree with the consensus above that Fielder will hit more HR than Thome, injuries or not, and I would think that Prince's low end would be about Thome's peak (somewhere around 35), with Prince definitely having the upside of a 15-20 HR difference or more depending on how many AB's Thome ends up with. A somewhat objective projection would be about 40-33. The biggest risk involved in this trade is Thome's injury history. To me, that is the measureable difference here. Assuming they both get their 'maximum' AB's, if your offense is loaded, you might easily be able to absorb the difference in production and not lose any ground. If that is the case, then you should definitely look to add a potential #2 fantasy starter to your team, and what amounts to very little cost. If however you feel Thome will most likely miss a significant portion of time, you need to factor that in. If you are serious about the league, take a few minutes to get at least a general idea of how your team would stack up in HR, and the other categories if possible. If you project to hit 330 HR and the next best is 280, and your R and RBI look similarily unaffected by a slight drop, I'd probably make the trade, but if you feel as if you will need every single one of an extra 8-10 HR's you can get, maybe stay where you're at for right now.
  16. You should be getting a solid #1 pitcher like Bedard or Webb if you're giving up Fielder. I don't know why you expect so little out of Prince Fielder..sounds like pure guesswork to me. He's given no indications that you should doubt him. He's become a better hitter as his at bats have increased. Not only the power, but he takes walks more often and gets on base more frequently. They don't hit for the same average. Thome hit 13 points lower than Fielder last year and is a career .281 hitter. Along with all that, both Burnett and Thome are injury prone. No deal Howie.
  17. Why are people expecting Fielder to possibly have a sophomore slump in his 3rd season?
