  2. I'm not bothered in the slightest.

My aunt is in a wheelchair (paralyzed, no loss of motor functions) and I also used to volunteer for Special Olympics so I'm probably more accustomed to this situation than most.

Cuz, if I hadn't written out the OP in the way that I did, I feel like it wouldn't have been possible for a response/full-understanding like the one you just made to happen.

fwiw, I didn't read any of the OP. I just read the thread title and instantly knew what was going on.

edit: actually that's not quite true, I read the first 2.5 lines of the OP

  7. when i was younger I always tried to avoid eye contact or anything altogether so that the person wouldn't think I was staring. Then I did some work with the special olympics and even volunteered as a translator for the Chinese team when the world games were held in Raleigh about 10-12 yrs ago. after that became a lot more comfortable and instead of looking away I will often try to make eye contact and smile and even say hello if the situation permits.

That's the thing though, in regards to what you and Mr323 said about purposely looking straight at them and smiling, I feel like if I do this I'm equally as fucked as if I try to overly-casually just look away/act like I don't notice them. Cuz it's like, if the person wasn't disabled, obv most people don't usually look at the person who is going past them straight in the eyes and smile at them and/or say hello, when it's just some random dude walking past you on the sidewalk or whatever. So then, I feel like if I were to do that, they would know I was being weird and treating them differently, by trying to overcompensate and going like TOO far of showing how non-awkward I am about the situation.

It's like in that episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm where Larry David gets introduced to the black Doctor, and he ends up trying too overboard to show that he is extremely non-racist/has no awkwardness around black people, and he goes so overboard with trying to show off how comfortable he is with race that he ends up insta saying some way overboard racist joke right off the bat, like mere seconds after meeting the guy, cuz he's trying to be all level-3 non-racist like, that he's so non-racist and comfortable with other races that not only will he not be awkward, but, he is able to even go so far as to comfortably/relaxedly crack racial jokes with them cuz he's so not-awkward/not-racist around other races that he is able to even do this, the way a black guy would be able to around other black people. But it ends up being way-too-far, like, he OVERdid it, so the black guy gets super offended. I feel like that's what it would be like if I stared straight at the disabled person and smiled or head-nodded or said hi while passing by them, since it would be unrealistic-overboard to act that way towards someone who was randomly passing by on the sidewalk, since if the person wasn't disabled, that would rarely ever happen.

Thus why I get all tense, since I never know wtf to do, cuz no matter what I do I feel like I'm doing something wrong and offending the person no matter how hard I try to act normal. lksdjsidfjusdjfdslkj

I think whats most important is your intentions. If you mean well, I don't see any harm in being a little more cordial and pleasant than usual. But then again, I live in the south, in other areas making mere eye contact with a stranger in public could be considered rude or threatening.

  14. I grew up right across the road from a special school or whatever you call it. So I've always been used to seeing people with disabilities. Never really think to much about it.

  17. you guys are just straight up awkward prob not used to socializing in general. i dont see the big deal getting tense or uneasy around someone who is different or disabled, especially if you are just passing them by for a quick moment.
