  1. I've never met a person who can't swim (or I've met them, but didn't know they couldn't swim). Some friends have said they are bad swimmers or whatever, but they all could stay afloat and make it across the pool if they had to.

-I was a competitive swimmer most of my childhood, was a lifeguard, and coached during my college summers, so lots of my friends growing up were swimmers, which helps.
-Plus most of my friends are white, which also adds to it: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/11/op...s.html?_r=1&hp
-At UNC-Chapel Hill swimming used to be a graduation requirement: "All UNC undergraduates are required to take a swim test in order to graduate until 2006. Legend has it that after the drowning of an alumnus, loved ones donated money to the school with the stipulation that all students must know how to swim. This myth is actually not true and, in fact, can be heard around campuses throughout the US. A compulsory swim test was implemented at UNC for men in 1944 and women in 1946. The idea indirectly resulted from World War II. In 1942, UNC was designated as a pre-flight training program by the US government, and the university was awarded funds to construct several structures on campus including the ROTC building, the outdoor pool, and the indoor track (then known as the "tin can" and very much different from the current indoor track facility). Obviously, the midshipmen (among them George Bush, Sr.) who were a part of the pre-flight training program had to learn to swim. During and after the war, national debates and discussions centered on whether America's youth were fit enough to defend our country. As a result of these debates and discussions UNC revamped its physical education requirements. It increased the physical education requirement and added the swim test. The swim test remained as it was implemented until the 1970s when it was changed to its current requirement. The requirement will not be a part of the new undergraduate curriculum when it is implemented beginning Fall 2006" http://gradschool.unc.edu/programs/w.../swimtest.html

    Who in OT can't swim?

Reason: fucking Quickdraw McGraw up there.
  4. There are plenty of cultures where recreational swimming is just not a part of their lives. In my neck of the woods there is a huge South Asian immigrant population. Every summer the papers are filled with stories of drownings as some of these folks end up dying because they did not take proper precautions.
  5. That's racist .gif

    I can swim.
  6. i know two white people that can't swim.

i was shocked of the lack of parenting...who the fuck doesnt teach their kids how to swim???

This, especially in Ontario, where you cannot turn around without bumping into a lake. Some Regional governments even have specific programs for the immigrant pop. just so the firefighters will have to spend less time dragging corpses out of the water. I am all for assimilation, but if you're going to be on the water, you better learn to swim.
  8. i can swim. im very bad at it. in an ocean type setting i would probably be fucked with a strong current but i can swim one end of the pool to the other.
  9. Definitely can swim...and stereotypes come from somewhere.

Our basketball team had to do pool workouts in college...all of my black teammates (except 1 mixed kid and 1 dude from Bahamas) were terrified to get into the pool.

    I thought it was hilarious.

I've also met white people who can't swim tho...

EDIT--and my brother-in-law (who is black) is a great swimmer.

It's actually pretty understandable; do you have any idea what a pain in the ass it is to dry out the inside of a gun?
  12. Nope

loooooool oddly enough, one of the guys terrified to get in got caught with a gun on campus later my junior year.

was kicked off team and forced to move off campus.

the real ironic part is that he only had the gun to take to the range and practice with...wasn't a banger or anything. he went to the range like twice a week...just shoulda found a better spot to hide the gun than inside of his CPU--which he then took in to QU's computer techs to fix...who then found the piece. well played, Antwone
  14. Can't imagine not knowing how to swim

  15. Love to swim
  16. i passed the swim test at UNC.
  17. Never understood how people can't at least float or tread water.

This, there's really not much to it, just don't ummm....let yourself sink underwater?
  19. Took all these fancy swimming lessons when I was a little kid and all they did was make me afraid of the water.

I was like 10 and with my friends at the ocean(dee dees house....we got to bring as many friends as we wanted then) with a life preserver on and they said I looked stupid and made me take it off and promised I wouldn't drown. I can swim now.

That was one of the coolest weekends of my life actually cause of the giant sandbar in the ocean we swam out to and let waves knock us off. Dee Dee is a bitch but can cook. We played ACTUAL golf at some chip and putt which was fun. We saw some awesome movie(Mr Mom??? dont laugh I enjoyed it) and we went fishing on my dads boat(and this was a 200000 dollar boat, we were still rich)

I always wanted to be a sarcastic asshole during lessons when the kids who were 3 feet tall would swim in 5 feet of water but not 15 feet. But I bit my tongue.

The thing is, even strong swimmers can get fucked by a strong current. A lot of people have no idea just how strong riptides are.

  29. surprised this thread discusses black folks..

a lotta people that drown know how to swim, weird huh?

I took lessons twice, taught me nothing. started going to the pool with a friend (one of the public pools was across the street), everyone there knew how to swim, I taught myself in an afternoon, it's not hard if you aren't scared of drowning, lol.

I was a lifeguard for four summers, public pool and at a resort at the lake of the ozarks, good times.
