Many people are constantly hounding the states for spending too much money on their military, etc. While, there is an undoubtedly high amount of money going into the military, keep in consideration that the US is still the wealthiest country in the world.
In light of the statement above here are some figures...
The USA spends approximately $550 billion a year on their military (which equals to 3% of their GDP)
Keep in mind, the average GDP used for military spending in all countries world-wide is at 5%. Therefore, it may come as a shock to you to see that the US actually spends less then the global average. Supportively so, do you think the US spends too much on military? -
no
-
i would need to see what exactly our military spends all this on to say whether it is worth it. but 700 bases in 132 countries is too damned many
-
Canada spends about $20 billion, which is 1% of our GDP. Then again, we're peacemakers :P
-
In principle, no, in practice, probably. If that makes sense. Of all the spending the federal govt does, military spending is probably my favorite (not that I like paying for $200 toilet seats, and fully loaded SUVs for Haliburton employees). I do find it ironic that so many in the world are concerned about this now, while during the cold war they relied on it for their own security. Either way, they aren't being asked to pay for it, so they don't get a vote.

NATO ftw.

Sorry if I offended you emcee for being canadian?
gfy ty -
ha, go fuck an igloo
-
if you agree that we should spend less, please be more specific on where to take the cuts.
-
uhm, im pretty sure 700 bases in 123 countries could be cut somehow.
-
yawn, pick on somebody your own size.

Defense from who exactly? Is Russia going to try and invade us all of a sudden? The reason we spend so little on our millitary is because we have no intentions of invading other countries. In my opinion it's sad that in this day in age a country has to spend so much money every year to "defend" it's self when that money could be going to sooooooo many different and better things.

If you got your defense spending numbers from the budget, they don't include the war in Iraq or Afghanistan.
So you better add in at least a couple hundred billion more. -
the federal gov't should not be spending 1 cent on public education according to the 10th amendment. it's up to the states and local gov't to fund education.

It seems like it's 4 percent
