Two reps from the Nielson Company stopped by yesterday with a care package and told me I had been selected to have Nielson monitors placed on my TVs. I had received a letter a week or so ago saying the same thing but I didn't pay too much attention to it. I told them to come by today at 6 pm b/c they have to have a longish discussion about the monitors and demographics in the household.
Has anyone had any experience with this? I think it would be kind of cool but I dont know what kind of hassle it might be. -
What? Is google it but I'm on my phone and it's a pain in the ass.
-
i dunno wtf your talking about and google isnt helping

The fact that this is still the way we determine the life and death of TV content boggles my mind. I mean, what, 70% (# completely guess) of households have cable/satellite with a computer box attached to their television?
For the newbs "ratings" are determined by statistical sampling of carefully selected "Nielson families" who have a device hooked up. If you dont have one, your viewing habits don't matter.
Cable channels must have some sort of tracking above and beyond this, right? -
was thinking the same damn thing^^^^^^^^^
-
I always wondered that... That is ridiculous that I have never heard of it. obviously their numbers have to be flawed right, considering no one knows what the fuck it even is.

Nielsen Box

how do people not know what a neilson box is? where do they think the nielson ratings come from? -
my wife and I were discussing this recently and we decided, since we hadn't heard anything about the nielsen ratings in so long, that they had went away because more reliable info was so easily available through cable. (obviously didn't bother to google it.) clearly they think they are getting "good" data and they probably check it against the info that can be obtained from cable companies but why go to so much fucking effort?

the nielsen's used to be what determined advertising rates, can hardly believe they still use it for that.
lol, just read the wiki about the nielsen's, unreal how poor their methods are and how bad the data they produce is, whatta joke. -
tbh I felt the same way. there's no way billions of dollars are decided this way, right?...lol

When I was a kid we were a Neilson family for a week. Every member of the family got a booklet to fill out and send back. We were paid 4 crisp one dollar bills for our trouble.

If you do the full two years they give you about $800 over the course of the program. + they have a bunch of incentives for improving your TV watching. Like $25 every time you upgrade equipment and paying for half of a TV if the original was damaged
-
I remember some tv show from when I was a kid and they for the Nielson box and the joke was that they only put the tvs connected to it on to watch "smart" things and then they were watching their real shows on some tv not connected to the box.
