  1. I have never gone before, but i have recently become interested in taking this up as a hobby. Does anyone have any tips? I am thinking about getting an inflatable one because they are a bit cheaper, and i live right by a river that isnt very rough, so i wont be worried about ruining it on rocks or anything. I really know nothing about it, so any tips would be appreciated.
  2. I've been kayaking several times...I've never heard of an inflatable kayak though...don't they call those rafts?
  3. they are becoming quite popular these days. especially for back-country trips

  4. PM this guy kayak101187 . I bet he has.
  5. yeah, i only have a car, and i dont think i could really transport a full fiberglass kayak, so one that i could inflate on a wing would work out nice.

  6. Always wear a helmet and life vest.
To do real kayaking you need a good sense of balance and a strong core.
That picture looks more like canoe.

    Have fun.
  7. if you dont run it on rocks or anything rough you dont need a helmet...Id suggest a heavy plastic river kayak that will last a long time. Go to Sports Authority or Dicks and they should have a bunch..I take mine out on the Potomac daily and all I need is a life jacket...I just throw it in the back and dont even have to wear it. I doubt you need it, but in DC we have to register it as well.

  8. Do you paddle back upstream, or do you go in a group and leave vehicles downstream? It obv depends on the river, but i didnt know if that was somethign that was normally done.

  9. Well the Potomac is pretty calm so I usually go wherever I want and then just come back....if there is anything resembling a current and we dont have our big boat out Ill row upstream then just flow back to where I started...It sounds like you want to make longer, less circular trips than I usually do, in which leaving a vehicle downstream is probably the best idea.

  10. the potomac is quite a bit bigger than the river i would be travelling on, so i will be probably going downstream a ways and then just paddling back. The river is probably 100-200 yards wide, but there isnt a ton of current that i know of.

  11. i have only done it once, and i was pretty terrified the whole time... we were kayaking on lake cushman (beautiful place here in wa) and my hubby loved it but i didn't like being level with the water and the feeling of it around me, they told me if it flips just to wiggle out but that freaked me out more as i imagined myself trapped upside down under water.

same trip, i went canoeing... liked that much much more... hubby hated that and was all freaked out i would tip him out with my awkwardness and he would get his weed sack wet... but i felt much tippier in the kayak than the canoe.

    have fun!!

  12. I still say that's a raft.
  13. <3 kayaking, if you ever get a chance go kayak surfing in the ocean Sof fun.
  14. Kayaking in rapids is the nutz. Paddling through flat water is a bad beat.

If you're just going to be paddling in flat water, the raft in the above pic is more than enough for you. If you're going to be in white water, you'll need a better yak.

    GL in your kayaking endeavors!
  15. no but i went canoeing one time and ran right into the only Pillar on the river, Canoe tipped over and everything went down stream!h

  16. With the kayak he should be using, its pretty much impossible to get trapped inside when it flips over....there isnt even a place to put my feet/body inside ours

  17. I hate Kayaking. Did it once and will never do it again
