So I take my dogs to the dog park by my house and try to go when it looks pretty empty. They are nice dogs, but are not that great around other dogs. So we get there and i let them run off the leash and they are ok and meet up with some small dogs, my dogs are labish sized, both males, and they do ok just sniffing the small dogs out and playfully running around. so we walk to the end of the park and start to walk back and see that there is a few other people with like 5 dogs entering the park, as we get closer i put my leashes on my dogs, not knowing how they would react to the bigger dogs now in the park. This is like the second or third time i have taken them there and the first time the park had other dogs in it. So I put the leashes on and we are walking and come up on the other dogs. The other dogs obv come up to sniff my digs, but as they get close my dominant dog starts to bark and acts all mean snapping at the other dog. I pull him back and we all walk out and go home.
I was thinking, so you think he gets aggressive like that b/c he is on the leash? Or do you think it is b/c the other dogs were bigger than him? When they were off the leash and just came up on the other dogs they seemed to be ok and not aggressive...i dunno, but i like to take them there, but i don't wanna get sued when my dogs bites another dog. Obv I don't condone my dog biting and always tell him no and give him a slap on the butt, but i'm just not sure if it's b/c he is on a leash, or if he is just aggro.
Cliff notes:
Dog is ok off leash with small dogs
dog barks and gets agrro towards other dogs while on leash
wondering if it is b/c of leash or just aggro -
I'm in no way a dog expert, but I've seen a number of dogs that are fine off leash, but get aggressive when they on on leash. Dogs have a way of figuring this stuff out, so I'd leave your dogs off leash, and see what happens.

Some dogs are definitely more aggressive on a leash.. we take our dog to the park fairly regularly, and she often aggressively goes to play with other dogs, which is usually much more tramatic for the owner than for the other dogs. I've actually seen two women start hitting each other with those tennis ball throwing plastic wands after two dogs started barking, snapping at each other. That being said, we occasionally throw the leash on her at the end of our stay, as I think she can sense that we are leaving. Dogs will be dogs, and usually they are fine off leash at the dog park, as really no dog feels it's their "territory".. being on the leash might bring up some bad behavior... we also tried just leaving her off the leash around other big dogs, but staying close so we could grab her if things got too crazy.. which seems to work most of the time.

My border collie/lab mix is awesome around other dogs, only time she ever bit one is when another dog bull-rushed my wife as we were coming in the park. Blood everywhere, bad dog to hospital, my girl spotless...never been more proud. :)
My sheperd/beagle mix is a whole other story. She likes to run and when she was little she tried running around the park and she got chased down and rolled. That happened a couple times and it just added to her anxiety and now she snarls at other dogs if they come up to her face. It's pretty funny really, she doesn't get aggressive just basically says GTFO or I'll end you. However when she's on a leash she does what seems like preventive aggression and mock attacks any dogs coming within 10 feet.
Who knows, dogs are dogs and I believe in letting them sort it out themselves. Unless it gets out of hand, then I step in and stop it. Most of the time it's just posturing. -
I used to to do same exact thing with my dog at the park. I would leave her on the leash and she acted like the biggest meanest badass there. I think it is because they know their owner is there to protect them if they bite off more than they can chew. Once I take the leash off her she is the bigges wussy in the park and is submissive to every other dog there.

I cant get my pup to walk at all. i put a leash on it and it just sits there. it is only 9 weeks old though. but I tried to tug the leash and it just kinda drags it some.

uh, don't drag it...that's the worst thing to do. It'll fight you all the way. Get some treats out and bribe it. It'll get the idea.
