That is perhaps the most ignorant thing i've ever read. Assuming i am from the suburbs, It is wrong for me to listen to Hip Hop. Because I'm not african american or latino, I moust listen to rock? Makes perfect sense, why would i want to listen to interesting and insightful (not all), when i couold listen to people screaming over guitars and horrible drums. Sorry, I take boombastic drum music (thanks chappelle), over suicidal, wrist cutting, screamers everyday.

It conveys alot of emotion, something rap fails to do. I have no problem with hip-hop, but rap is to music as Jerry Bruckheimer films are to movies (Bad Boys 2 etc.), they are for entertainment only and have no meaning. I mean this as a general idea, there are alot of talented exceptions.

The majority of rap music has the same themes running throughout, about how they fame wealth women etc. Why was nelly raping about all the money & fame he has on his FIRST album? many people overlook the subtleties of rap music...rhythm, alliteration, complex rhyme structures... granted there are some rappers who do not have much skill and have made it by following the "i hate bitches", "imma shoot your ass" structure, there are these type of music artists in every genre

that eminem line was insane....content in his songs might at times be questionable..but he's ridiculously talented

i'm not a huge fan of rap...meaning i listen to it at times..but not all the time like other genre's...I agree about the mtv society and all that..but Kayne West imo is a songwriting genius...he's excellent..

Screamo/Hardcore/Metal

some of the most amazing stuff i've ever heard. most of the amazing screamo/hardcore music that the vast majority does hear isn't that at all, or mtv has done their best to fuck up the image of a great band. i.e. (coheed and cambria (none of the above genres but mtv is fing them)..my chemical romance...i rarely wear the tshirts anymore because of mtv gg that...whereas i saw them live 6 months before anyone really heard of them..and the show was absolutely amazing.

ill list off some amazing bands, in hot sauce categories kinda cuz im a dork:

for light (in my opinion) rock/metal: Dredg, 30 Seconds to Mars

medium (screamo punk): Emery, Coheed and Cambria (older stuff)

medium-hard: Lilitu (amazing band from atlanta),

hard, but amazing: As I Lay Dying, As Hope Dies

uber awesome hard: Through the Eyes of the Dead

i know of a ton more, I also know of a bunch of amazing female lead singers, new age pianists, indie rock, etc....

People should just keep an open mind, and really give things a try/listen to stuff before they make sweeping generalizations...about anything...not just in regards to music
