  1. I just saw an interesting comment on TV(CNN to be fair)

Yelling drill baby drill at this point in time is akin to yelling Typewriter baby typewriter during the dawn of the computer age.(or something to that effect)

What do y'all think about that?
  2. Aye
  3. agree
  4. It's a pretty horrible analogy. The entire world runs on oil at this point. If we were ever going to drill for more why wouldn't it be now when we're at the "dawn" of the alternative energy age? Why suffer under higher prices than necessary during the transition?
  5. wonder why you didn't hear it on Eco-Friendly Fox News.
  6. I think a better analogy would be when I used to do coke, at some point during the night one of us would say, "let's just get one more bag and then we'll definitely, DEFINITELY stop"
  7. definitely a better analogy.

just i never "needed" coke before.
  8. true, your heart will probably stop beating without oil.

the point is, you don't need it but once you start you just can't stop (until it's all gone)
  9. OK then why didn't everyone just throw away their $40 typewriters in 1972 at the "dawn" of the computer age and buy word processors that cost $2000? I mean they were addicted to those god-awful machines, whatever the price they should have stopped producing anything off of a typewriter until they could wreck their personal and national economies buying massively overpriced, inefficient first versions of computers.
  10. seriously, i see great merit in both the coke and the typewriter anoligies. i think perhaps it is more brought on by a frustrated economy. most of you prob. don't remember when the alaska pipeline was being built but it offered very good paying jobs as well as our own fuel recources. like ross perot perhaps saying fuck-we are americans and we like it BIG! so i'll drive my dually AND recycle my bottles
  11. WHY DOES IT HAVE TO BE EITHER OR.

Yes we need to put a lot of energy (pun intended) into developing new forms of energy. We should be attacking making solar/wind/water power the same way we spent money on going to the moon. There is going to be some short term pain, yes.

BUT we should also drill for oil. Oil will always have a purpose (at least for the next 50-100 years). typewriters don't really have a purpose now. they have been completely and totally replaced. that's where the analogy stops working

I think we should drill but the priority needs to be clean renewable energy. And I get nervous when I hear all this natural gas talk. My heating bill is already high in the winter. I hope we're planning on increasing natural gas as well.
  12. ya the cng idea for transportation fuel is retarded.
  13. It's kinda like, 'Yeah, I'm gonna stop drinking tequila and just start drinking vodka.'
  14. Solar, Baby, Solar!!!

oh, but how would energy companies make any money then? I guess the government could tax your square footage somehow.

Here's how I envision the future. Highly efficient solar panels on your house that convert water to hydrogen for you to use in your fuel cell vehicle.

The problem is carbon based fuel is too cheap right now. We need to drill all of the oil we have and use it up as quickly as possible and then we will be forced to change.
