  1. My friends brother was involved in a drunk driving accident on Thurs. night. His ex g/f was in the car and not wearing her seatbelt. When the car hit the tree, she was ejected, and DOA at hospital. My friends brother was driving, and recieved compound fracture of his arm. Speed was contributing factor. Thank god his son was not in the car with him, and that it was single vehicle accident, and not more loss of life.

As bad as this tragedy is, it is not of my belief that a driver can "cause" the death of a passenger in his/her car should that passenger not be wearing a seatbelt.

looks like his son will be without a father anyways... pretty sad

I don't condone what he did, and in no way defend it. He will most likely get 3 years or less. Canada, has some of the softest penalties in situations like this.

It's the responsibility of the driver to make sure everyone is wearing their seatbelt.

No. Ultimately your safety is your responsibility. If you choose to ride with a drink driver, you are responsible for bearing that risk. If you also decide to not wear a seatbelt then that puts even more risk on you, of your choosing. Listen, this is always a tragedy and obviously the guy shouldn't have been driving but why does everyone who made the decision to ride with him and ride without seatbelts get a pass on responsibility?

Maybe for children. But any adults in my car are responsible for putting on their seatbelt.

Great, we all know we should be smart enough to take care of our own seatbelt. But the law says the driver is responsible for making sure everyone has their seatbelt on.

This is 100% false in IL, and I can't see it being the case in very many places.

I've been pulled over and given a speeding ticket, but I had my seatbelt on. My buddy was in the passenger seat and didn't have one on, and the cop wrote him a separate ticket for not wearing a seatbelt. If it were the driver's responsibility, I would have gotten the 2nd ticket, too.
  9. Is drunk driving illegal in Canada? I ask cause well I go there frequently and although I'm American and can do anything I want, I'm curious.

100% bullshit. The driver does not have to jeopardize his passenger's life or his own life because they are stupid and don't want to be safe. I will not drive anybody that does not belt up. I own the car, I make that rule. They can walk if they don't like it. I don't want your dumbass head flying into mine when we get T-boned and end up hurting me. Likewise when the passenger is in the back. I don't want you flying into me when you keep going after the vehicle suddenly stops.

Facts are facts and seatbelts save lives. Only super idiots do not wear seat belts. Yes you have a right to be stupid, but when your stupidity affects my health and welfare is where I draw the line.

Odds are I'm not going to get in an accident, so I'd rather be comfortable.
  12. I got a speeding ticket in WV and someone in the back seat wasn't wearing a seatbelt (i didn't even know), and cop added an extra fine on my ticket. I'm sure this is state by state.

lol, its a felony, so yes.
  14. Had a similar thing happen with my sis-in-law's niece. Except in their case, the two people wearing the seatbelts were the ones killed and the ones not wearing theirs survived.

Driver was drunk and rolled the car over into a ditch. The people wearing seatbelts couldn't get out and drowned. Pretty sad stuff.
  15. drunk driving that leads to somebody dead is premediated murder, they need to stiffen this law and i have no love for ppl that drive drunk or the pity stories they come up with. God forbid, if it happened to somebody in my family, i would wait outside the court, shoot them in the head after their BS sentence, and claim i was drunk
