Here's some pics of a mile long super bridge that's set for construction in March.

As if the Burg Dubai tower wasn't already taking the worldwide skyscraper race to new heights, this as-yet-unnamed span will be the world's largest arch bridge, with 2000 vehicles set to cross its 12 lanes—per hour, in each direction—when it's slated for completion in 2012. At 670 ft. tall, Dubai's next super structure will stand higher than the George Washington Bridge (604 ft.) but fall short of San Francisco's existing Golden Gate Bridge (746 ft.). -

I go to Dubai every 4 months and I love it. I have been to this hotel and just to get into the place you have to pay about 60 bucks to just get in. I have been meaning to play a couple rounds of golf. I will probably play a round or too in April when I go and then in May I will play another round. Very Nice place to go. I have been there over 10 times and havent played yet. Going to do it this time for sure.

so much money, so little space
-
Too bad they throw you in prison there for years if you have a microscopic speck of a poppy seed on the bottom of your shoe.

Sick

I for one, would like to see pics of Curtass in Dubai. Can you hit golf balls off the roof of that sucker like Matt Lauer did?
-
I will take pictures when I am in Dubai. I work in Afghanistan and Dubai is the central transit point to get in an out of Afghanistan. So when I go through again in april I will take some pictures. I will also go there when I come back in May then when I go home in July and then will be there coming back in August. But to anwser your question about the golf balls off the roof...lol...no....haha

funny thing is, you think all the money is coming from oil. it's not. It's only six percent of GDP
-
so what is the rest? i'm gonna guess oil products / oil construction
-
basically they provide banking/financial services/launder money for the Arab world and provide them with entertainment and distraction. Saudis go there to drink and check out the imported prostitutes, etc. While the Emirates are probably the least-worst Arab country in terms of degree of 6th century barbarity and closed-mindedness, they still have some scary rules and laws and don't exactly embrace the full panoply of western freedoms (ladies, don't walk down the street in a tank top, k?). You are denied entry into Dubai, for example, if you are from Israel or have been to Israel, even if you are one of the million-plus Muslims who are citizens of Israel.
they do have some cool sh1t, though -
exactly, 60 minutes had a pretty neat special and they talked to the crown prince. All the people building these massive structures and islands are brought in just for labor. They're paid very poorly and live in barracks type housing. Not many countries could get away with the type of conditions these workers have to endure.
Part of the reason they have switched away from oil is because they're running out. Their oil fields are drying up and they realize like George Clooney said in Syriana 'In 100 years when the oil is gone you'll all be running around cutting heads off in the desert again.'
The government also owns a piece of everything that is done. They own that skyscraper, those islands so forth.
I think you'll see they loosen their laws up a bit sometime down the road but it would always make me nervous going to those types of places. -

Sick, some very nice structures there I would love to go there someday

The quality of the construction going on in Dubai is horrible... They are going to have a lot of problems down the road.
http://www.nce.co.uk/international/n..._in_dubai.html
'A lot of structures will be money pits in 10 years' time, ' predicts the regional manager of a European construction materials supplier working in the region.
'If you look at the quality of construction, even on some of the landmark projects, it's an absolute disgrace. Defects are very soon going to turn into maintenance problems. There are structures only five or 10 years old that are already having millions of dollars invested in repair work.'
