  1. Just a question for someone who doesn't watch the NBA...

Why is Cleveland a #2 seed??

    <table border="1" bordercolor="#cccccc" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td colspan="15">Eastern Conference</td></tr><tr><td>Eastern</td><td>W</td><td>L</td><td>PCT</td><td>GB</td><td>CONF</td><td>DIV</td><td>HOME</td><td>ROAD</td><td>L 10</td><td>STREAK</td></tr><tr><td>Detroit1</td><td>42</td><td>22</td><td>0.656</td><td>0.0</td><td>26-12</td><td>6-5 </td><td>19-12</td><td>23-10</td><td>7-3 </td><td>W 5</td></tr><tr><td>Cleveland2</td><td>41</td><td>25</td><td>0.621</td><td>2.0</td><td>23-16</td><td>7-5 </td><td>26-8 </td><td>15-17</td><td>9-1 </td><td>W 8</td></tr><tr><td>Washington3</td><td>36</td><td>28</td><td>0.563</td><td>6.0</td><td>23-16</td><td>7-4 </td><td>25-9 </td><td>11-19</td><td>5-5 </td><td>W 2</td></tr><tr><td>Toronto4</td><td>36</td><td>30</td><td>0.545</td><td>7.0</td><td>24-14</td><td>9-2 </td><td>23-10</td><td>13-20</td><td>5-5 </td><td>L 1</td></tr><tr><td>Chicago5</td><td>39</td><td>29</td><td>0.574</td><td>5.0</td><td>28-13</td><td>9-3 </td><td>25-8 </td><td>14-21</td><td>7-3 </td><td>L 1</td></tr><tr><td>Miami6</td><td>36</td><td>29</td><td>0.554</td><td>6.5</td><td>20-16</td><td>6-3 </td><td>23-10</td><td>13-19</td><td>9-1 </td><td>W 9</td></tr></tbody></table>

Now in hockey I know division leaders get the first 3 seeds no matter what...and I noticed that Chicago who has a better record than the 2 division leaders is behind them in the standings, while Cleveland is ahead...just wondering why?
  2. thats jus standings...not playoff standings...same seeding as hockey so cavs wuld be a 4 seed
  3. Then why is Toronto ahead of Miami and Chicago??

Toronto is 7 games back, Chicago 5 and Miami 6.5

  4. jus a mistake...toronto is division leader of the atlanitc
  5. I don't think it's a mistake the standings have been like that in the paper and on NBA.com like that for a while now...there has to be some explanation??

  6. SEEDINGS ARE
    1 DETROIT
    2 WASHINGTON
    '3 TORONO
    4 CLEEVALDN
    5 CHICAGO
    6 MIAMI

    STANDINGS ARE
    1 DETROIT
    2 CLELEVALDN ETC

nba.com jus has them messed up
  7. I thought for this year they didnt guarantee you a top 3 seed if you won your division so you wont have a mavs/spurs matchup in the 2nd rd n things of that nature. I think if you win your division you get homecourt in the first rd guaranteed n thats all. Im not 100% though.

  8. I'm still not getting it...

If you go by record the standings should be

    1.Detroit
    2.Cleveland
    3.Chicago
    4.Washington
    5.Miami
    6.Toronto

when you look at the playoff picture on yahoo it does the same...

    Eastern Conference <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr><td colspan="2" height="18">Team</td><td align="right">GB </td></tr><tr><td height="18">1.</td><td>* Detroit</td><td align="right">-- </td></tr><tr><td height="18">2.</td><td>Cleveland</td><td align="right">2.0 </td></tr><tr><td height="18">3.</td><td>* Washington</td><td align="right">6.0 </td></tr><tr><td height="18">4.</td><td>* Toronto</td><td align="right">7.0 </td></tr><tr><td height="18">5.</td><td>Chicago</td><td align="right">5.0 </td></tr><tr><td height="18">6.</td><td>Miami</td><td align="right">6.5 </td></tr></tbody></table>

Theres no way NBA.com, Yahoo, ESPN and TSN are all wrong.

  9. Ship's explanation makes sense...Division winners get 3/4 home seeds, and the other one goes by record...

    thanks ship.

  12. I guess it makes sense though...

It'd be the same for hockey if they did it...

the standings in the west would be...

    1. Nashville
    2. Detroit
    3. Anahiem
    4. Vancouver

Just means the two best teams in the conference can't possibly meet till the conference finals.

  13. sgagfhdsggds gadfga i gotta pay more attn...damn cant believe they changed the rule after all this time
  14. They decided to change the rule because the concern that a team in the Atlantic Div would finish fifteen games under .500 and still win it were too great. They didn't want a sub-JV league team getting the #3 seed.
  15. LOL ok didnt see the last few posts but HERE is why CLEVEND IS the #2 seed if it started today.

Rule in affect starting this year, taks away the automatic divition winners getting the top seeds. because they had the issue where last year it was in one teams best interest to LOSE the last game of the year in order to not have to play DALLAS in the opening round, who had a better record then the seed they woulda had to play if they won the last game.

example( i think this is what happened last year, i may have the teams confused but same idea)

San Antonio was best record in West overall
Dallas was 2nd best in west overall

Dallas tho was the 4th seed casue they finished 2nd in divition.

teams who were fighting for 5th seed would RATHER BE 6th seed and play a #3 seed who was not nearly as good as dallas. so being the 6th was better then 5th.

so they made the rule, and it is correct

If the top 2 teams in the conf. are in same division, they get the top 2 seeds, so that teams dont have to WIN to play BETTER teams in the last week of the season

CLEV. is #2 if it started today.
