I recently bumped into some music clips from my youth back in Holland. In the seventies and eighties we had some pretty good bands in The Netherlands. Some of them you may know but most of them you won't. There is some solid gold in here so I wanted to share my Dutch Top 10 with you. By the way, this list is not a reflection of my current music taste. I am mainly into rock/hard rock and new wave (Cult, Clash, AC/DC, The Cure etc.) but it is fun to hear the songs from when I was a kid again. I did not include any songs in Duthc in this list, only English lyrics...

On number 10 there is the song "Venus" by Shocking Blue. You will remember this from the later Bananarama version but the original was by the Dutch band "Shocking Blue".

On number 9 there is Earth and Fire. This band exists longer than Earth, Wind and Fire by the way. They started out as a rockband but later on they went the disco way.

Number 8 Since 1961 there is an annual songcontest in Europe, called The European Song Festival where each country nominates one act to compete against the others and then each country gives points to the other countries. In 1975 the Dutch band "Teach In" won the contest with the song "Ding-a-Dong". This song did not make it into my top 10 due to gayness but their other hit "Dear John" did. Like the song but the choreographer should have been fired lol.

Number 7 At the end of the seventies and the early eighties every young boy had a poster of these 3 lovely ladies on his wall or door. They had a score of big hits in The Netherlands and were popular throughout Europe. Again awful choreography but who cares!

At 6 there is Anita Meyer. I have no idea why she never made it internationally. She has a great voice and this song was later on covered by many other singers.

At 5 another song by Luv. Gotta love the costumes!

At 4 we have another girl band: Centerfold. They had a smash hit with "Dictator". By the way, the lovely lady on the right has appeared in Playboy (google Rowan Moore).

At 3 we have Hollands own Madonna. Her name is Vanessa. But she already had big hits in Europe before anyone had ever heard of Madonna. "Obsession" was one of her biggest hits. She married the owner of Hollands largest music store chain. The sounds is actually pretty up to date. I am sure if Lady Gaga or Britney Spears would record it today it would become an international smash hit. This truly is a great act.

At 2 there is a band that many of you will actually be familiar with. Golden Earring had many hits in the US, such as "Twilight Zone", "Radar Love" and of course "When the Lady Smiles", infamous for the clip that was initially banned in the USA... But my favourite is "Twilight Zone".

and, drumroll please....
Number 1: Hollands own bad boy of rock and roll: Herman Brood His Wild Romance. They scored a long string of hits (many of them about drugs) and did a US tour. Saturday Night is their most popular song. Drugs in the end destroyed Herman Brood and he took his own live by jumping of the roof of one of Amsterdams most upscale hotels, the Amstel Hotel...

1 Herman Brood & His Wild Romance
2 Golden Earring -Twilight Zone
3 Vanessa - Obsession
4 Centerfold - Dictator
5 Luv- Oh yes I do
6 Anita Meyer - why tell me why
7 Luv - Trojan Horse
8 Teach Inn - Dear John
9 Earth and Fire - Memories
10 Shocking Blue - Venus -
Theres a lot going on in that op, none of which I follow.
