i put something for sale on ebay recently for several thousand dollars and received an email the next morning. went something like 'i am looking for something exactly like that...what is your final asking price?' i responded and he responded that he would pay my asking price and asked to setup a transfer of the money through an escrow service which i thought was good since i have no idea how to trust someone in this situation.
at this point i thought he might be legit. then he offered to pay the shipping and the transaction cost of the escrow transfer. i asked which escrow company he deals with and he gave me www.aide-transfer.com. he is based in Paris, France and this site is based in Lyon, France.
Now my bullshit detector is going off.
I havent sold anything on ebay in a long time...and nothing of this value. Is it pretty standard to receive emails from people trying to get you to ship the item and use fake escrow sites?
his ebay account has great feedback...granted that could be fake too -
better safe than sorry
-
I think the escrow service is a standard ebay scam.
-
from my experiences in the past, ebay catches on pretty quick to scammers trying to provide "fake" feedback and jacking up auction prices. i'd search around and see what more you can find out about the escrow site and maybe look at some of his other recent purchases and the locations that they were bought from to check him out
-
paypal or GTFO... IMO
-
Ive always used Paypal and never had a problem with 100+ transactions. Why don't you just use paypal?
-
can u not contact ebay and see if they know anything about that? im sure they could research his account a lil better.

I have a gently molested 4 year old llama for sale. I love this animal but need to get out of serious credit card debt. She enjoys long walks and mutual touching. I am firm on the $17,000 unless you show up with a few unopened boxes of Topps wax packs we might be able to work out a deal.

i've never used an escrow service on ebay but just google the company and contact them if they exist. I'd also contact ebay live chat and ask them for advice.
Proceed with extreme caution but dont dismiss it as a scam until you've done your homework. -
does paypal take care of holding both the item and the money and releasing the money when the buyer is happy with the product?

when I tried to sell lincoln card I went through this bullshit....tell them PAYPAL OR AT THE VERY LEAST A MONEY ORDER OR GTFO.....and NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER EVER agree to send anything unless you have the cash and you can spend it.
-
you gonna send 10 grand to a stranger in another country and wait for it to arrive in the mail? lol. i have a few things i'd like to sell you
obv im not shipping it till i have the money -
paypal make sure they are confirmed
nothing else
you are a good mark cause it looks like you havent sold much on there before -
I've seen a ton of scammers on craigslist....they say to use ebays secure payment escrow blah blah and give you a link to a fake ebay site..... they always have great feedback. I like to mess around with them I've tracked down a couple of them to czechoslovakia. I'll often times ask them to send me a link to their fake ebay site to check the quality of their work and the dumbasses usually do.
If they ask for bank #'s to do a wire transfer watch out. -
pretty sure its a 95% a scam...but lol at ^ this guy and askin for their fake ebay site, i tend to click on it knowing its fake and input fake stuff, and when the password shows up as ******** im sure to put in "fuckyoucocksuckers" instead of my real password of jsimp4life errrr....nvm!

Scams are insanely rampant there... deal within established channels, try not to do business with people who are asking you to deal with money internationally and through agencies of their choosing, and you will be fine. Paypal or GTFO...

plus they have to use a particular type of payment on paypal or they can reverse the charge (not dispute it).
I forgot what type it is, maybe another experienced person on here knows but I made a transfer to someone for poker money and then they just canceled the transaction.
I think it is if they use a checking account but not sure
