  1. Sparked off the caffeine substitute thread made earlier today.

I have been wanting to make a thread about energy drinks for a while now, especially because I am worried about my father who I think is addicted to them.

Everyday he will drink at least (1) 24oz lo-carb monster drink. He might even have a second during work, however I am not sure. Our fridge is loaded with these things at all times. I started drinking them over the summer until it got to a point where I forced myself to stop. I couldn't start my day without cracking one open and after I did I was amped and wanted to be on to go or doing something. That isn't necessarily a bad thing however something just didn't feel right and one day I just got super jittery and decided I had to cut them out completely.

I have been telling my dad that they are unhealthy and having 24oz + of them every single day can't be good for you but he doesn't seem to care. My dad is in a pretty high stress situation and is 56 years old. He is also on a lot of other anti-anxiety medicine so I can't see this being a good thing for him over the long haul.

I am very much considering a hardcore intervention with him over these things because I can see no good from this. Thoughts?

  2. i agree with you bigearn. these can NOT be good for you although i dont think they are bad in moderation (one a week or so). i used to drink them daily for a month or two stretch. i then noticed if i did not drink one i would feel lethargic, tired, and irritable so i just stopped. wasnt hard at all obv but i did feel tired for the next couple days. i was mainly effected during the early afternoon. i did have caffeine headaches from not drinking them too. i would say something to him about it but he is 56 so if he decides to keep drinking them at least you tried.

  3. Bigearn just not ready to relinquish the crown
  4. My heart operation cost $110K and a lot of physical/emotional pain.

    Because of my heart arrhythmia.

These energy drinks can cause heart arrhythmia.

They are a waste of money and not necessary to get "energy".

    its a scam.

    ok..carry on.

    Protecting the throne muthafuckas.
  7. Pluv had a good post regarding them a while back, I'm sure someone will link it. I go on unhealthy red bull kicks occasionally when my job gets stressful and feel like I'm sleep walking the first few days without it
  8. I drink one probably 29/30 days. I haven't done a ton of research, but I haven't found anything, specifically, that is more awful about them than other drinks.

I mean carbonation is bad for your teeth. Caffeine in large doses places stress on your heart (particularly if you have a shitty heart). The ones loaded with sugar obviously aren't good for your diet. But I don't know that they are any worse than soda/sugary coffee drinks like most people assume.

Part of the problem for me at least, is that they are easier to abuse than other sources of caffeine. I am not going to drink 12 cans of soda a day, nor buy 2-3 starbucks coffees, but I will drink 2-3 energy drinks a day if I buy them in bulk.
  9. Definitely one of those things I've just always stayed away from. (Well have probably had about 5 cans lifetime all from Jager Bombs) I don't care what people say about the ingredients and they are fine etc. etc. I just have always felt that stuff is poison and some day in the future will be regarded in a similar way to smoking (remember cigarettes used to be prescribed by doctors to help with stress etc. we had no idea their harm in the early stages).

Normally I'm the type to say "show me studies" or "prove they are bad" about anything but with these I just don't care, I won't touch them no matter what anyone shows me about their ingredients.
  10. I only drink them with alcohol. They are stronger in Asia where there is no regulation. Once I get one in me I know it is going to be a long crazy night.
  11. I am fairly educated on energy drinks. First off, those cans you have pictured and which are most commonly sold are actually 16oz and not 24oz.

At least he is consuming the Lo-Carb version and avoiding the excess overload of sugar.

It really boils down to consuming the high quantity of caffeine on a daily basis. Every can he drinks has about 140-150mg of caffeine.
16oz of black coffee would have approximately 100mg of caffeine, and 1 can of coca-cola contains about 35mg of caffeine.

Being that he is 56 years old, consuming caffeine inthe range of 400-500mg per days could be dangerous. If he were to drink 3 of these in one day, which Im sure he has before, that would be cause for concern. That much caffeine can alter the heart rhythm and cause abnormalities in cardiovascular function and ultimately lead to a heart attack.

Many other factors can affect this, such as: level of physical activity, body composition, medical history, family history of heart disease, etc., etc.

Additionally, constant consumption of caffeine on a daily basis of this level can cause adverse 'withdraw' effects, such as headaches and irritability.

I would just try to get him to spread out one can over a day if possible, get him to pour half of one into a cup and save the other half till lunch time. Then try to get him to go every other day or something. Just make sure he isnt drinking 3 of these in one day multiple times in a row.

That is what made me post this actually, I remember his comments about them in a thread from quite a while back.

  13. I remember pluv spouting off nonsense about energy drinks a while back too.

I don't even drink them myself (I do chug coffee and carry no-doze on occasion) but I get tired of hearing how bad they are for your health. for them to be THAT bad they'd have to actually contain some super-effective ingredients and they just don't. they have about 200mg of caffeine and a few b-vitamins, OH MY GOD. take a caffeine pill and pop a multi-vitamin and you'll get just as far. quit paying $3 for a shitty-tasting soda because it's called an "energy drink," and for fuck's sake quit believing they have some magical power that's so effective it must be bad for your health.

actually, you can say they're bad for you, but you'd better be just as absurd about mountain dew.
  14. Mountain Dew is the leading cause of virginity in 16-34 year old males.
  15. caffeine (mg)
    5 hour energy shot: 138
    diet coke 12 oz: 35
    coffee 16oz: 200-300
    full throttle 16oz: 144
    redbull 16oz: 160
    monster 16oz: 160

  16. I work shifts and whenever they change it from nights to days I'm on the red bull for a couple days. I'm more con Ernest by the sugar than the caffeine tho so I never get too bad on it. The sugar free one sucks.

+1 to spreading it out. I usually just bang it in the fridge and drinks a third or so every break I get
  17. Between this thread and the other one, I've now seen three different numbers for caffeine content in coffee. Anyone want to post sources?
  18. If you just noticed that caffeine is a drug...PM me for some great money-making ideas.
  19.

Thanks. This seems consistent with other stuff I'm finding online as well.
Interesting info at http://www.talkaboutcoffee.com/how_m...too_much2.html. they say their source is the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference
  20. I drink about 2 XL (20oz) coffees from Tim Hortons per day.

And a 16oz red bull when I need to pull an all nighter
