Heard a clip about it today while eating lunch and i believe it was keith mccants who got a 60k injury settlement from the dolphins and he went and spent 50k of it on a new hummer because he "had to have it" lol. If you know you have a shot at going pro why not take some personal finance classes while youre in school or similar classes?

Edited By: MeJahAndOmaha Oct 2nd, 2012 at 10:44 PMUh, b/c people are so shocked by athletes blowing through a large sum of money quickly, and jaybone's life for the last 5 months is a pretty good parallel of an athlete going from broke, to filthy rich, to broke again in a short period of time.Originally Posted by AMARTIN1181
why are we comparing jaybone winning 25k to an athlete making millions of dollars per year ITT
ha! You didn't debunk shit tho. You basically just confirmed that after coming into $25k in a single day, you ran through nearly half of it in the next 2 weeks. You wanted to play the ME. That's cool and all but don't try to tell me that somebody who is financially disciplined wins 25k in a $200 buy in and then blows through half of it within 2 weeks partying, shopping, and playing $10k tournaments. Explaining how you went through so much money so fast is not equal to explaining why you went through so much money so fast.Originally Posted by Jaybone2315
lol, thats my point.
I was more surprised by the comparison so I figured id go ahead and debunk all that mess real fast.
Not trying to pick on you or blow up your spot. You're just a good example of what happens when somebody living on a tight budget comes into a relatively large sum of money suddenly with no plans for how to preserve it.
Reason: less douchey -
brandon jennings for the bucks donated 50k to a charity, has an apartment and drives a for festvia...and he makes (apperently) about 2.3 mil a year. they people wh oblow through this money are stupid. plain and simple. i dont get how someone would take joy in them fucking up so bad.

Dont get me wrong, i dont feel sorry for these guys. But im smart enough to understand why it happens in some cases and why it doesnt in others. This makes me think of Alfred Morris from the Redskins. This is what he still drives becuase he knows his contract isnt guaranteed:

Smart guys like this probably wont go broke. -
Edited By: Jaybone2315 Oct 2nd, 2012 at 11:22 PMIs 25K an absurd amount of money or something to you? Do you make $6/hr?Originally Posted by MeJahAndOmaha

And how dare I spent half of my winnings on something that is on my bucketlist and still leave myself with 5 times as much money as I had a week before.
Im really not understanding the hate, or how you could possibly equate 25K to tens of millions. Even i lived like a hermit, never left my house, and only spent money on bills and food... i dont think I could have made it last a year lol. And as of right now, ive made it almost 5 months and still have 1/4th of it left.
But yea... other than that, youre totally right. -
apparently having 25k means ur filthy rich in MJO's idea of reality. if he had 25k he probably wouldn't even find out if his roomate was a hooker or not.
-
Apparently Bernie Kosar is a part of this. Should be good.
-
It's not hate, and I don't know why you're so offended by my comments.

25k isn't an absurd amount of money. It's not even life changing money... but it is a lot of money. The median household income in 2011 was roughly $50k. You made half of that in 12 hours. Most people who are lucky enough to make half a year's salary in one day don't set out to spend half in the next 2 weeks, whether it's traveling to Tokyo or buying into a $10k poker tournament.
I just think that the mentality that you had after you big score is similar to the mentality of an athlete who gets his first big contract. Whether its a guy winning the lottery or a guy getting an NBA contract or a guy winning his first 6 figure poker score... I think the mentality is all the same. People think that it's easy money and easy money will keep coming in, so shit, I'm gonna treat myself to a new car or a new house or a luxury vacation. It's the same reason why so many elite poker players from 2 years ago are broke or struggling now. Easy money dried up and lifestyles werent adjusted accordingly.
The main difference between your summer and these athletes (aside from the amount of money) is that they never intend to run through all their money while you made a conscious decision to swing for the fences and gamble it up with most of yours. There's nothing wrong with that, it's just not conservative by any means. Didn't mean to offend you. Just thought that there is a similar mentality comparing a guy after his first big poker score to a guy after his first big pro contract. -
MeJah is spot on in this thread, imo. And I've done the same thing. Had a huge score for 10-25K range multiple times and I would go out and blow $5,000 on stupid shit, booze, or just take it to a table and go all in nonstop or buy into a big tourney. I kept telling myself its ok b/c I still have xxx amount left and it's more than I started with.
That's not the point. I wish I would have been more mature then when I was doing all that. -
well said sir!

And before you try to paint it with a broad brush, I'm not saying you're a racist or KillerFost is a racist (although we know Oh Rale is), but the schadenfreude so many people display in these situations has a somewhat race-based tone to it.
Also what Jaybone said is so true---even a little bit of money is going to change people, let alone 50 million when you're 19 years old after scraping by your entire life with next to nothing. Why do so many lottery winners (or even poker players with one big score) go broke? It's the same thing. -
Lol Rickey Henderson.

Say it don't spray it Andre
Andre Rison hasn't changed at all. That dude would go broke again if he was in the same spot. -
Making it rain
Lol black people -
Love Andre Rison. On the Packers 96 SB team and banging Left Eye. My hero.
-
They are just letting these guys brag about how much they spent, and not really saying anything.
-
It's too broad. They have too many people talking about too many topics.
-
I think it's funny and ironic that these agents and financial advisors come on here and want these athletes to spend a bunch of money on them. All your friends you grew up with are leaches. They'll make you broke. Me on the other hand, I just don't want you to go broke. I care about you. yeah, fucking right. They're the biggest leaches on here.

I think the thing people don't get is that they don't have people around them saying "nah dude that's a dumb idea". They have people around them LOVING everything and every move they make, no matter how dumb it is.
That being said, I still think they are idiots. -
bernie kosar is sweating so much it looks like he just got out of the shower
