Didn't realize they were doing this until I saw a commercial last week.
Some of OT prob never heard of Chris Herren. He was a super talented hoop player who fucked up his career cuz of drugs and booze. I know, pretty common story!
Thing is I played against this kid in high school. He played for my high school rival Durfee HS in Fall River, I went to New Bedford. Dude was a fucking punk and def unguardable.
There might be even footage my white ass at the end of the bench.

Heard his interview on the SVP show today. Dude is lucky to be alive Sounds like it should be another great documentary
I believe they are calling it "The Vault" now instead of 30 for 30
he also has a book out about this iirc
yeah found it

Watching this and it is great so far.
-
good ole' times....lol @ me trying to take a charge
-
which one are you?
school name and number
i dvr'ed it and will be watching later -
I was in high school when he was playing. Our hs was playing his in the playoffs and we went pretty much to just watch him play. We lost obv.
-
I understand he was great and all, but why is this story special? He seems like a special talent that fucked up with drugs and booze, big fuckin deal, he didn't make it to the NBA, there's tons of people who didn't make it for similar reasons. It seems like he is fine now. They already did the Len Bias doc.
-
Lol I love how they say "this 30 for 30 sponsored by jameson whiskey" lmao
-
Frederick Weis, kill me
-
He DID make the NBA. Its amazing how well he played on Oxy and when he was a coke head at Fresno

I meant make it IN the NBA. He played 80 games in two years. He could have played more, but he was a fuckin junky. I still don't get how this doc is any different than hundreds of stories.
-
I will wait for reviews, sounds pretty depressing to me... don't really want to watch. I read the brief mention of it where they said this one was much more difficult for Hock to relive the experiences with the subject, as opposed to the Marcus Dupree feature where he was happy to discuss the past. Lot of painful things still for Herren, such as deserting his wife and childen. I hate watching that stuff.
oh my -
please come back to this thread and talk out of your ass more

He was the 32nd pick in the NBA draft and had a couple successful seasons...You must have never played small town high school sports if you can't somewhat relate. This guy was a local stud, had drug problems, and still became a college and NBA star...I dunno these stories just get to me and I think about how close he was to his hometown and wife.

good story, definitly crazy to see him still perform at the high level while being a total dopehead. Unfortunetly 30 for 30s are soooo good this is just mediocore. The guy had the talent to be a top 5 pick if he was sober in college. and while i type this holly fuck, talking about selling everything in his house for dope. Crazy story
-
this kid, even playing against him, seemed larger than life. I remember us saying to each other during a game, were playing a future NBA player. It was pretty cool!
-
It's different because he had millions thrown at his face and he still chose to do a shitty ass drug like coke instead. Miraculously, he was still good enough to be picked in the 2nd round and START for an NBA team even thought he was doing heroin (oxy) daily. That's ridiculous. There's hundreds of stories like that? And the way he turned it around at the end and stopped being a total piece of shit also makes the story unique. There's not hundreds of stories like this.
-
wow, I don't even usually watch the 30 for 30s but that was really, really good.
-
to be honest
the world is filled with lots of stories of redemption
and
lots of stories of failed redemption ... btw, where is that Ted Williams voice dude anyway, still a junkie? -
First of all, he started 8 games in two years. I don't mean to belittle this accomplishment...I am still proud of what I did in sports and it wasn't 1% of his accomplishments, but I mean, Mickey Mantle played on a destroyed knee with an average blood alcohol level of .08 and still did what he did. Some people can still achieve athletically despite being complete drug addicts. Also, I don't think he chose to be an addict. Part of the difficulty of addiction is that it controls your entire thought process and obviously, it cost him a lot. I think it is awesome that he has come to terms with his addiction and his demons and currently has them under control. I am happy for him. It ended up being a good and empowering story, yet it was still sort of a meh documentary.

I hated watching this guy speaking with such conviction knowing that at the end we were going to see an insecure dude and get no closure as an audience. Such is the life of a former heroin addict though. Hopefully he stays clean -
a very compelling story
i think it was presented in a fantastic manner
I find it hard to believe that many can watch it and not be moved by his story
i wish him, and his family, well -
it is on Saturday the 5th at 7:00 am on ESPN2, aka channel 209 on the DirecTV
-
that was an awesome documentary. seems like outside of all of his drugs his biggest mistake was going to BC to play. coach K and many other college coaches would take such a prodigy under their wing like a they are a son. he obv needed this. i also found it really cool that Nick VanExel and one other player on the nuggets (cant remember his name right now) went out of their way to help him out to keep him out of situations where he could do drugs. to bad he got traded to boston so close to his hometown. things could have been a lot different for him.
