  1. I'm thinking about joining the bone marrow registry to do it. Anyone have any experience? A friend's cousin has leukemia and it's not looking good. I always thought it was crazy painful, but after reading about it, it's actually outpatient surgery and you can walk that day with minor lower back pain for a few days.
I am fortunate enough to have O- blood (universal blood donor) and do not have CMV (a virus the majority of people have in their blood). I love giving blood because they tell me every time that my blood only goes to babies. The only thing is it deals with tissue type.
Any input is appreciated VERY much.
  2. I've never done it. I'm sure the slight discomfort is well worth it though.

  3. afaik they dont even have to drill into ur bones anymore. just give you some drugs that basically make the bone marrow go into your blood, then collect your blood. this would be pretty painless unless you are terrified of needles.

gl to the friends cousin, and everyone should get on the donor list.
  4. I knew you always wante to inject yourself into babies.

Def. Encourage you to do it at least once. Hopefully it really is easy and you can do once a year or more. Recently had a friend die of leukemia (actually of the drugs necessary to do a transfusion- such a horrific process. They basically kill your entire immune system by wiping out all of your own bone marrow + white blood cells in order to prepare for the healthy marrow. Live in a bubble for a few weeks and hope a sneeze doesn't kill you. Can't imagine it. It's one of those things where it's the best we've got right now, but makes you think, really? In the 21st century this is the best we can do?)

    sigh eff cancer
  5. how much does it pay?
  6. Somebody in OT (Think it was Phi) tried to start a bone marrow drive of sorts. There is a site were you answer a bunch of questions and they tell you if you are able to donate. if you are you just wait till they find a match. I failoed the test
  7. Im on the registry but i have never gotten a call to donate, I do donate blood platelets oce a month though...

  8. leukemia is a terrible disease. very painful to undergo the treatment, and spending a lot of time in the hospital (30+ days at a time). donating marrow is very important and a lot less painful to donate than it is to receive it. if you have any opportunity to do so i would highly recommend doing it. it is however a pretty exhausting process. so make sure you dont have a lot on your schedule in the coming days after you donate.
  9. Cal, you've done it?

I'm somewhat ashamed to admit I've never donated blood. I've donated time and money to the red cross, but am reluctant to give blood. I'm not particularly shy of needles or blood or anything, just feels weird thinking about putting part of myself in a jar for someone else to use.

Def. Want to shake this irrational idea an give blood + organ donor card, but haven't sacked up yet.
  10. My doctor wants me to donate my body to science. He seems to think that the sight of me naked would be enough to make gay men straight and straight girls turn into lesbians. I might do it, still thinking about it.
  11. i have never actually done it. but recently a friends mom and a young cousin of my one of my friends were diagnosed with the disease. i have done some helping out with my friends mother, like errands and stuff around her house to help her out. but she has described it as some of the worst pain she has ever felt in her life. she gave birth too twins and she said that was a walk in the park compared to the bone marrow transplants.

    good memory!

  13. I had corneal transplants so I am forever relieved of the guilt of not donating anything.

  14. I encourage everybody to donate blood and have their marrow tested.

When I was 20, i got pretty sick, which eventually lead to hospitalization. I went through a shitload of tests and bloodwork, but they couldn't figure out what i had. They told me they wanted to test my bone marrow, to help narrow down the probable causes. I wasn't too worried about it beforehand, I just assumed it would be either painless or at worst some mild discomfort.

I couldn't have been more wrong. I was wearing the typical hospital gown, and laid face down on the table if front of the doctor and around 10 students who were there to observe. The doctor proceeded to expose my hairy ass, and climb onto the table, straddling my knees. He had a giant looking needle, that seemed to have a diameter of 1/4 inch. It had a knobby top that the doctored used to hammer it down into the back of my hip. Needless to say it hurt more than anything i have ever experienced. He hammered it 3-4 times and used a syringe to withdraw some of the marrow. I thought the pain was over, but when he withdrew the needle, it caused a vacuum effect and air rushed into the newly created void. That felt like a hot metal pole being shoved into my hip. He decided his sample wasn't big enough, so he went back in for another shot.

I really think i was in shock at that point. I was completely covered in sweat, and had tunnel vision. I felt like puking and passing out. To this day, 15 years later, I still getting a shooting pain in that location a few times a year.

I'm hoping that bone marrow donation does not involve anything like that, but I would go back and do it again if it meant potentially saving someone's life.

    Donate!!!1!

Holy shit you get laughing gas at the dentist when you're getting a god damned filling, seems criminal they wouldn't offer you something for something so horrible.

  16. My brother had Leukemia. Both my sister and I tested and my sister was a perfect match. The procedure they used (about 4 years ago) was to take it from the blood....so she was hooked up to a machine that was slowing drawing blood and processing it. I think the process was about 8 hours. It was not a painful process, but she was definitely very tired for a couple of days.

This process saved my brother's life, so I am obviously a strong proponent in favor. I applaud your generosity and compassion and think that there is no greater gift than someone offering to save the the life of a complete stranger. Best of luck to you!

  17. As someone who donates blood(doubles/triples) every 3 months, I have never thought of donating marrow and more than likely never will.

$0.00 and not responsible for any costs from the procedure (except time off work).

Holy shit! you didn't get local or general anesthesia? the reading i have done made it seem like you get general most of the time so there wouldn't be any pain during, just after. I'm pretty sure I'll do it anyway, the pain i feel can't be nearly as bad as losing a daughter. p.s. you're the man.
