Ok, situation here, 1st place team has already locked into 1st place going into the last week before playoffs. He is playing the 4th place team who needs to most likely win to stay in 4th. The 5th place team is much stronger than the 4th place team, so if the 1st place team benches his whole team, then he will play the 4th place team again 1st week of the playoffs.
But instead of benching his whole team, he puts a few backups in and leaves in some starters. 1st place team still somehow scores a decent amount, then Desean Jackson goes off and puts the 4th place team in the lead by 3 points. 1st place team still has Giants D and decides to bench them before the game tonight, essentially locking the 5th place team out of the playoffs.
I know for a fact that they dont know each other.
Should the 1st place team be forced to start the Giants D? -
No, but be careful what you wish for.
-
-
forced, no. Its all about strategy, id lock out the better 5th place team too.
-
seems like a solid strategy to me. I had a buddy in our league ask the same question, and I told him I would sit his team if I were him.
I would be pissed if i was team 5 though, lol. -
How is this an ethics question?
-
5th place team should have done better earlier in the year. When you put your playoff chances in another team's hands, you have no one to blame but yourself.
-
team 1 is being a punk...since you dont force teams to start a defense when their team is up by one point and they sit a monday night defense then i dont see how you can force him to start one in this situation.
-
5th place teams argument is that he should have just sat his whole lineup in the beginning and that there could have somehow been collusion towards the end of the night and the 4th place team could have got the 1st place team to sit his team.

Does this change anything?
PS I am just the commish.
And the 1st place team is essentially controlling who he plays next week, which would kind of rule against collusion imo -
I feel like we go over this every year. If it's not clear collusion then any team in any league anywhere should be able to do whatever the fuck he or she pleases in order to increase their chances of winning..
if theres any proof of collusion (i.e. text message or something), then yes, its wrong..if not, then absolutely fine -
It's kind of a cheap/dick move and will be funny if it backfires but I guess if no ground rules were laid out before the season started you just gotta let him do it and address it next year if you're all in the same league again.
-
he can sit the def if he wants. I would never do it even if I really perferred a matchup with team 4. You just never know whats going to happen on weekend in fantasy football so potential matchups are worthless really. Gonna suck to be team 1 when team 4 goes off and beats him while 5 puts up a 60 pt dud.....

yes, as someone mentioned, we DO go through this every season

it is NOT unethical to give yourself the best chance of winning without cheating (tho this is one of those cases where it inevitably results in the worse team beating the 1 seed in the playoffs when the other team would not have...i know firsthand!)
this is why I have said for a long time that if you wanna prevent this...make a reward for the most points in regular season...i.e. for every 50 points ahead you are of the team you play in playoffs, you have a 1 point advantage starting the playoff game...kinda like home field in a sense...or encourage sidebets which will give incentive to field your best team possible each week
or put in whatever system you want, but make it an incentive for the best team to not have the luxury of affecting the playoffs like this...and even if you choose not to do this, then the ONLY reward for being in first is to essentially get to decide who you play in playoffs...
thus, i cannot see how this is unethical at all
