Fedor Emelianenko has signed a multi-fight agreement that will see the worlds No. 1-ranked heavyweight compete for Strikeforce, the promotion announced Monday.

Emelianenko, who became a free agent after Affliction Entertainment canceled its Aug. 1 event two weeks ago, will make his debut on Showtime under a co-promoted Strikeforce/M-1 Global production this fall. Emelianenko was to have faced Josh Barnett at Affliction Trilogy on Aug. 1, but Barnett failed a pre-fight test for anabolic steroids and was refused licensure by the California State Athletic Commission.

Emelianenko, along with his promoters and management team M-1 Global, negotiated with the UFC last week, but could not come to an agreement over co-promotion.

"Strikeforce is a top fight promotion that houses some of the greatest fighters in the world," said Emelianenko in a press release. "I am prepared to fight any of them."

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker told Sherdog.com last week that he plans to match the stoic Russian against the likes of Brett Rogers, Fabricio Werdum and the promotions heavyweight champion, Alistair Overeem.

I feel pretty confident that we could give him four or five opponents that would make sense for him, Coker told Sherdog.com in an exclusive video interview.

  2. Weak sauce.

  3. So lame! What was Fedor thinking?
  4. GG Strikeforce. Damn and I really liked Strikeforce too.
  5. Im gunna go ahead and guess that Fedor has roughly no voice in who he fights for.
  6. Exactly...this is his management trying to prove to Dana White that they have options and don't need the UFC.

Seriously, does Strikeforce even have any Heavyweights? They got Werdum and Brett Rogers...how much is Fedor gonna make off those fights? I'd pay to see Fedor vs. the Cyborg though.
  7. He;s gonna fight who now? I'm not a Dana White fan by any stretch but I do think he did the right thing in telling M1 Global to fuck off when they wanted to co-promote. What the fuck did they really expect?

It sucks that we aren't going to be seeing Ferdor vs. Lesnar and other good possible matchups now. No disrespect to the strikeforce fighters but the UFC match ups would be 1000% better and more interesting to watch because of the bigger names involved (and probably better fighters to be totally honest).
  8. Though i truly believe Fedor is the greatest HW in the world right now. I would love to see someone like brett rogers with a strikers chance and lay hands on Fedor, not cause i dont like fedor as a fighter, but for him not voicing his own opinion and agenda instead of letting M-1 have him by the balls.

If Fedor gets beat in any aspect in strikeforce. The chances of M-1 ever getting a co-promotion again will be gone forever.

I remember a company who put all their eggs in one basket with a certain fighter (Kimbo) and now they no longer cease to exist even after locking down the first major network deal.

i hope Fedor pulls his head out of his ass soon.
  9. I like this move if he isn't going to be in UFC. Rogers, Werdum and Overeem are 3 quality opponents. If he can't fight Lesnar, I'd reather see him fight these guys.
  10. should only take him 2-3 fight to clean out strikeforce if they dont sign some other guys he will be back in Japan next yr

Fedor co-owns m1 and that's what he was thinking. He is obviously more interested in building up his own company than fighting the best in the world.
