Does the movie live up to the hype?
-
It was 88 on RT last time I checked. I'll be going to see it this week probably...
-
veryyyyy good movie, especially good if you follow boxing and knew of mickey ward before this film. def one of the best movies ive seen in a while.
-
Everytime I see the commerical when he says, "Not you, and not you" I fucking die laughing. He sounds like Mayor Quimby.
-
uhhh True Grit tho....
-
All three of the ward/gatti fights are in the top 5 fights I have ever seen
-
I just left the theater and this is from my phone, so forgive any typos or auto-complete mistakes.
Christian Bale rips the throat out of this role. It's pretty amazing to watch. Supporting cast is good as well and Wahlberg is steady with some highlights of his own. I didn't watch boxing growing up, but I think Wahlberg nailed Mickeys reputation for a niceguy fighter with a ton of heart and toughness.*
Melissa Leo transforms into Alice Ward, making Wahlberg and Bale's performances even better.*
I am not nearly as negative about Mark Wahlberg as Skeeze. He has made some terrible movies and at least some of the fault is his, but this is a very good role for him and I think he nails it. I didn't grow up watching boxing but from what I gathered fr a quick wiki and the thread the other day Wahlberg captures Micky Ward's
niceguy with a ton of heart and toughness very well.*
Vale is a virtuoso in this film. I mean it is great to watch an actor just throw himself into a role with complete abandon and produce a performance that doesn't for a moment make you think, "oh, this guy is acting".*
Wahlberg is the baseline to Bale's violin solo, but without his steady, understated performance the movie doesn't happen. His big scene where he finally stands up for himself is very well done IMO.*
I am an Amy Adams fan. I thought she was great in Sunshine Cleaming and have enjoyed her in other roles. She is very good here, but for some reason I found myself a little distracted by her here. Maybe she was just upstaged by the other actors, but I felt like she was half a note off. Despite that she has se great scenes and does well enough.*
Overall a very very good film. It's not an all time great, but the Bale and Leo performances are worth the price of admission on their own.* -
I'm sick of hearing about True Grit. No remake has ever gotten this much hype, not even the King Kong shit from a few years ago. Will it be good? Probably. Will a single person walk out of the theater saying, "OMFG that is the best movie these eyes hath ever seen!!!!1"? Hell no.
-
HTF did thus become about True Grit?
-
Saw it Friday night. I enjoyed it. Acting was very good. Btw, I'm not a fan of boxing, but I even cheered (quietly lol) at one point when he was fighting :)
-
how is it like the Professional? It looks like a classic revenge story in the awesome cowboy days. Also it is not a remake per se, a remake would be following the John Wayne movie, but this more so follows the story of how the author originally wanted it to be told so technically it is a remake, but not really. If it is anything as badass at Open Range or any of the recent westerns, then this movie will rock.
-
christian bale was amazing in this - very talented guy, but felt the movie overall fell flat......its pretty cut and dry - I felt the boxing sequences were a little lackluster as well...expected more
-
Ummm...he is not being a homer...2 of the 3 fights were documented as fight of the year bouts. TWICE they both had to go to the ER after the fights for trauma. Amazing fights that will stand the test of time in boxing
-
I said they were great, great fights. I just thought all 3 fights taking up a spot in his top 5 did, in fact, show homerism. Bigearn's post is a perfect example of what I'm saying.

lol well if that sounded mean it wasn't meant to be, you should see when I am a dick! I love the professional so I just didn't see how you meant it. The professional has the greatest death scene of all time

" This is..... for.... Matilda"
" O SHI.......... BOOOOOOOOOOOOM" -
eat shit loser...of course u think bale was the best ur still beating off to him plowing those women in american psycho LOLZ

This thread is off the fucking rails.
I agree that if you focus on the boxing this move falls flat.
The point is that the dramatic tension is not in the ring AT ALL.
It is in the relationships, especially the family, Dickey's trainwreck of a life, Alice's co-dependency, Micky's desire to please conflicting with his need to be his own man and get out from the shadow of his brother and the disfunction of his mother.
Those are the elements of the movie that matter and I think all of the actors do very well, to incredible jobs portraying those struggles.
I would give this a 7.5/10 or a 4/5. It is very good with some brilliant elements. Not an all time great tho. -
Just got back from the movie, solid 8. Characters were all played great by the actors. Wish they showed the Ward vs Gatti bouts =(
-
I get this from a boxing perspective, but again, I don't think the movie is about boxing at all. It's the vehicle, not the driver or the road.

The Ward-Gatti trilogy may be the best I have seen in terms sustained action between foes, but trilogies like Bowe-Holyfield, Zale-Graziano or Ali-Frazier were contested at a much higher skill level. Same argument with Ward-Gatti I vs. Corrales-Castillo I. Ward-Gatti was probably more entertaining and had more wall-to-wall action, but the Corrales-Castillo fight involved two fighters who were better than Ward and Gatti on a pound for pound scale and had better overall skills than both. I appreciate all of the fights listed above for different reasons. But, Ward-Gatti I Round 9, Castillo-Corrales I Round 10 and the entire Thrilla in Manilla bout are all special for me.

RIP Chico Corrales and Arturo Gatti btw-- gone much too early and the sheer exhiliration they provided in their fights and the heart they demonstrated in adverse situations in the ring will never be forgotten by fight fans
