Edited By: BubbaKGB Dec 8th, 2010 at 04:12 AMMmmmm, well said. You raise some incredibly insightful points as to why a movie which garnered an 8.3/10 on IMDB and 94% on Rotten Tomatoes deserves no place in this thread.*Originally Posted by Demitrius100

*By no means do IMDB and/or Rotten Tomatoes have the last word on what sort of acclaim a film deserves, but the significantly higher than average scores both sites give Fargo is evidence enough for me to argue that you have no idea what you're talking about. -

-In Bruges = underrated and wish i owned it
-Collateral = overrated although i do own it
-Eastern Promises = never seen this movie
-Lucky Number Slevin = you seem to like these weird cutsy artsy movies. This and In bruges are similarly directed and acted
-Usual Suspects = very good top 20 possible
-Gladiator = good flick could be in my top 20
-Pineapple Express = huge letdown. plot was stupid dumb and far too gory and violent for a pot tripper comedy
-Inception = have not seen...yet
-The Princess Bride = classic. anybody want a peanut?
-Pulp Fiction = probably the one movie in your top 10 that makes mine. but it's likely tenth. -
Fargo is a freakin' masterpiece. Best Coen Brothers film for me, perhaps the best black comedy of the last 25 years. Frances McDormand's acting and Roger Deakins' cinematography are brilliant. I'd probably rate it among the top 10 movies of the 1990s.

Eastern Promises was a Cronenburg movie centered around the Russian mob. Mortensen was great. also lots of classic Cronenburg knife kills.
-
Barton Fink

1. Days of Heaven
2. Annie Hall
3. The Godfather I & II
4. Stalker
5. Dead Man
6. The Passenger
7. I'm Not There

No particular order:
Pulp Fiction
Shawshank Redemption
Braveheart
Eyes Wide Shut
There Will Be Blood
A River Runs Through It
The Natural (Greatest sports movie ever made imo)
Requiem for a Dream
Taxi Driver
Seven
No Country for Old Men
The Abyss
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Good Will Hunting
Inglorious Basterds
Sling Blade
The Princess Bride
Midnight Cowboy
Donnie Brasco
Apocalypse Now
Unforgiven
Tombstone -
My top three right now
Pulp Fiction- no movie entertained me, suprised me, moved me, made me laugh, to the degree that this did when I first saw it. three small movies any of which just on their own would be in my top ten.
Goodfellas- another entertaining movie...very similar to pulp fiction in many ways but more down to earth.
For the record I think the best HALF HOUR of movie history is the end of the shawshank redemption..this was a for the most part a average film with cliched characters until Red thinks andy is going to kill himself....the rest of the movie, told from Red's point of view is the best acting ive ever seen.
Empire Strikes Back- saw this when I was seven years old...contains my favorite movie scene...when yoda lifts x-wing out of swamp. Anytime its on i watch it and seems to be over in 5 minutes cause I get caught up in it -
Solid list.

Red Riding Trilogy
Edited By: RaisingCajun Dec 8th, 2010 at 06:03 PM
"The Red Riding Trilogy” is an exhausting, morbidly fascinating, and finally thrilling experience. The hardiest viewers may want to brave the five-hour marathon in the theatres, but most people, I believe, would be happier seeing it one episode at a time, savoring its complex turns, its perversities and occasional beauties, over a number of sweetly troubled days."

Edited By: blazeman Dec 10th, 2010 at 01:47 AMNot long after posting my top 20 in no particular order, I realized that I left the film Contact off the list. I thought oh well because I didn't think it would ever get mentioned by anyone else, but I sir agree with your opinion of this movie. I would probably have to rate it a little higher than Close Encounters. Contact is such an underrated movie it isn't even funny.Originally Posted by ScottBrewr99
