im not a total idiot to computers but, i have not built one - i know i can figure it out and build it- but im wondering if it would be easier to use parts of my curent pc for a new the one-- my comp is about 4-5 years old and is starting to slow down- most of my components are still good (dvd, video card, powersupply, case) my question is-- is it feasible or even a good idea to just purchase a new motherboard, processor, and ram. any input would be great- am looking at the AMD phenom 2 x4 965 - not sure about motherboard but i figured most of the asus ones would be fine- any ideas for a good motherboard would be nice also
Thanks for the help -
the reason that your shit seems so slow is that everything else has gone forward... mother boards have faster bus speeds, video cards have more memory, memory for the motherboard itself is running at a higher frequency. Your old stuff that is still usable if you wanna build your own with a new motherboard will basically be the DVD-Rom drive.

new systems are cheap, you dont have to spend 1k+ and get something top of the line, if your monitor is decent then a few hundo will get you into something relatively decent

sorry, I consider mouse, keyboard, and monitor peripherals and not part of building a new box... my bad, yea, you can use them as well.

I know things have moved forward which is why I wanna redo the system. I thinking i can use my case, power supply, reformat hard drive and use it, DVD/cdrw, -- I can get a motherboard and quad core AMD 3.0-3.4 both for under 300 ish $'s another 150 for memory and my system will be pretty high end for under 400-450$. Then later if I wanna upgrade the video card I can do that and add more memory-- I don't wanna spend 400$ on a "decent" system that doesn't have much upgrade options That I'll have to replace in a year or so-- is this a bad idea compared to building it all with new everything?

need new power supply for newer motherboards, perhaps you can use the case if your new power supply you're going to need will fit into it

is the current hard drive a SATA? -
I'm not sure about Sata It's a 130 gig 7200 rpm I thinks it's a ide but not positive - I'll
Have to figure that out when I take it apart- if the power supply is a atx and the mother board is also all I have to worry about is the size of my power supply right?
