  1. I am trying to get a part time job in the restaurant/food industry in NYC.

I went for a quick interview today at a local takeout joint. They are offering me $4 an hour plus tips.

I would be helping out in the kitchen with some dishwashing, some food prep and deliveries where I will earn my tips.

Does that sound right??? Anybody with any kind of info that they can share would be greatly appreciated.

Edit- Also in NYC- minimum wage is $7.25 an hr, but Im assuming for the restaurant industry it is totally different, rite??

    Thanks!!!

  2. treefiddy sounds about right, sounds like u did a little better.

  3. sick brag re working and saving up to buy a skateboard in 6 months
  4. Always hating on the poor man's grind norcal.

How do you know he just doesn't want to take his lady friend to a malt shoppe?
  5. by law they're allowed to pay you less than minimum wage under the assumption you make $x.xx in tips per hour. forget what the x.xx is but it's a few bucks.

  7. part-time take-out workers clearing $16 a day have ladyfriends? ffffuuuuuuuuu I'm doing it wrong
  8. I'd be pretty clear that if you're taking that salary you're either minimally doing dishes or not doing them at all.
  9. go work at mcdonalds...or find a real job.

    lol @ $7.50 / hr minimum

I think we surpassed that about 10 years ago. Minimum wage here now is just under $10.00/hr...doesnt matter if you work in a restaurant either.

  10. might i suggest you spend your first two weeks paycheck on these? might help with the pay raise

  11. I'm assuming they're paying you cash so it doesn't matter what min wage is...b/c even server/bartender minimum wage is $4.85ish here in IL. The whole deal sounds pretty terrible to me $7-8/hr I'd guess.
  12. Come out west... servers get min. plus tips as does everyone.... the cop out off not paying someone because they get tips don't fly out here.

Personally I think paying someone 4 bux and expecting you to earn the rest of the wage from tips is insulting.
  13. Lmao it's $2.13 an hour plus tips in ky. And with tips most servers average 12-15 an hour, mostly untaxed.
  14. In before the FWK calls you a loser.
  15. My servers get $2.13 - $2.83/hr depending on the state.

The average wage for what they claimed last year was $18.24 an hour (that is an average of a little over 300 servers).

Please don't feel sorry for servers that make less that mimimum wage.
  16. I don't really get how you are going to be tipped. You are much better off getting a server position or if you are not yet qualified enough to do that then busboy/barback. I would snap decline the job if I was you unless they can clearly tell you how much you can expect to be tipped and make on a daily basis.

The job you are describing sounds like a flat hourly to me. Again it's because I really don't get who would actually be giving you tips. The people in the kitchen sure as hell won't be and if it's a takeout joint only then the people making tips are the cashiers nobody else.
  17. Servers are cunts who don't deserve any tips at all.

lol @ $10/hr... if you guys had raised it to $100/hr then everyone would be rich!

    OH SNIZZZAPPP!! LOL!!!!
  21. FML- wrote a reply, then somehow the whole thing got deleted. lol

For the shift I am applying for (6pm-12am), I am hoping I can do at least 5-6 deliveries and get $2-$3 in tip per delivery which would raise my hourly wage to about $6-$7 an hour which isn't that bad considering I applied for this job to gain some experience. The only downside to this is and I have my fingers crossed, that there aren't too many slow nites. Phone doesn't ring, ZERO deliveries, which would suck.

At the same time, I hope I don't spend my whole shift doing deliveries cause I really want to learn some of the in and outs of working in the kitchen, dishwashing, and basic food prep. I actually did a lot of Craigslisting the last couple of weeks, and the position I was hoping to land of "Dishwashing/Food Prep" requires experience. Most requiring 2 years of NYC experience, which is a bit ridiculous I think especially for washing dishes, but whatever I don't make the rules.

Too bad I don't know anyone in the industry, cause most of the time....

  22. $6/$7 per hour is what your aiming at? Holy hell man.

When i was unemployed, people would suggest me jobs like that and i would just laugh. I guess its cool if youre 12 or have zero bills. But idk how you could do it.
  23. How old are you? I am assuming you are in NYC and have 0 experience?
  24. I am not sure how anyone could live in NYC with $7/hr unless they live with their parents or have no rent obligations and no life outside or work. If you have to deal with rent and/or want a life, you might want to consider moving rather than slaving away for no money.
  25. a job is a job, take it and keep looking for smthng better
  26. Maybe if you worked 100 hrs a week you could pay rent in NYC although your prob a bit younger and just need walking around cash in which case good luck networking at that job it may lead to a BBD
  27. lol. Should have stated I have a regular 9-5 job. This is more of a part time job. Definitely have working experience in NYC, just not in the food/restaurant industry.

And yeah $7/hr is pretty difficult to live off of in NYC.
Kinda off topic, but here's why I think that is....(more of a petty rant)

.5 liter bottled water- average price of $1.25- $2.50/bottle

Plain slice of pizza (except the $1.00 per slice places which serves smaller slices)- $2.25 and up.

Street vendor hot dogs- $1.75 and up.

"Okay and safe enough area" 1 br apartment in Manhattan or in some of the more accessible places in the surrounding boroughs or NJ- average $1200/month

    Movie tickets- $13.00

    Sales tax- 8.875% L-O-L

Subway ride- $2.25. I dont mind paying for this if the service was getting better, but it has actually gotten worst.

  28. You're complaining about a piece of pizza being $2.25+/slice and $1200/month 1 bedrooms??

    LOL

  29. $1200 for a "okay and safe enough area" 1 br apt in manhattan?

    Are you insane?

Avg for a when bedroom when I was looking a month ago was $2600 at a min to $2800. And thats a dump and in harlem (not that there is anything wrong with that). $3000 gets you adequate space and without the bum shitting in your alley.
  30. I thought NYC would be pricier actually, though I get the feeling you don't know what you are getting into at $1200 a month

.5 liter bottled water- average price of $1.25- $2.50/bottle----Same as Seattle

Plain slice of pizza (except the $1.00 per slice places which serves smaller slices)- $2.25 and up.---Same as Seattle

Street vendor hot dogs- $1.75 and up.--They don't have the shitty little hot dogs in boiled water here, It's $3-$4 minimum

"Okay and safe enough area" 1 br apartment in Manhattan or in some of the more accessible places in the surrounding boroughs or NJ- average $1200/month----I pay $1200 for a 2 bedroom in a nice neighborhood. From what I have heard from friends in NYC, your figure seems really low.

Movie tickets- $13.00--$11 at the place I go to

Sales tax- 8.875% L-O-L--9.5% in Seattle, be greatful

Subway ride- $2.25. I dont mind paying for this if the service was getting better, but it has actually gotten worst.---$2.50 for a light rail ticket, $2.25-$2.50 for a bus depending on time of day.
