Hey guys, I have a bunch of cards(thousands) I used to collect when I was in middle school along w an insane amount my Mom got for me at a garage sale. Im going through them now that I have endless free time. I bought a subscription to Beckett online price guide. They are 98% football cards.
I'm trying to separate the Commons from the Inserts and special cards like Rookies.
I am keeping an excel sheet of the cards and what they are worth.
Where is the best place to sell these to get max value?
So far some of my best finds:
1976 Topps Walter Payton RC $250
1986 Topps Jerry Rice RC $60
2006 Playoff Prestige P. Manning Jersey $25
Multiple cards between $5 and $20.
Thanks everyone( which I am guessing will mostly be WAR) -
Cards are only worth what someone will pay for them. Becketts is a joke as they inflate what realistic prices should be on the cards in order to keep interest in the market.
The other problem with older cards is that you need to have them graded in order to get top value. The market for collectors are in the older graded cards.
I would check prices on E-bay - that is where most cards are being sold.
One last thing - cards/interest go up when the player does something newsworthy (gets into HOF is basically it for retired players, or when current players have great seasons, win championship). And with Payton dead and Rice already in (and after DWTS), the only card that would get close to book value will be the Manning card. -
I have a Peyton Manning Bowman Chrome rookie card sitting around somewhere. Probably worth like 10 bucks and sadly enough it's probably my most prized possession.
I had a Ken Griffey Jr. card from UD back in the days when they had that Sportscenter thing attached to it and got some rare card that Beckett said was worth over $100, but then I checked it a few years ago and I think it was only worth $10.
Fuckin' inserts destroyed the card industry. -
ok so i guess my next question is where do i go to have them graded and how much does it cost?
-
We sold a ton of cards on ebay in the last year.
If the Payton RC is in good condition, get it graded. I'd go with PSA for grading - for this card it should $15 (prices for grading are based on value). If it is in great condition, it will increase the amount you get on ebay.
Also, when looking at ebay, ignore the "buy it now" cards. Look at the "auctions only", and find the items with actual bids. A PSA graded 7 Payton rc has 9 bids for $92 with 3 days left - I'd expect this to go up a little bit since there is so much time left. -
My wifes uncle buys/sells/trades cards and every other thing you can possibly imagine from all of the sports, i will talk to him tomorrow at dinner and see what your best opions are and will PM you what he tells me.

Payton Rookie is a sick find, I have one and it is one of my the favorite things I own, it is in great shape and I think I am actually going to send it in to get graded.

One of the first things I am going to do when I move back home is go through all of my old cards and such. -
anyone collect hockey cards here?
-
The payton rook will sell ungraded for about $50-$70 the rice between $10 and $20. as for the ultra modern stuff often you are lucky to get 10% of book, ESPECIALLY in the $5 - $20 range. Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but if you don't believe me just check some of your cards on ebay and see what they're actually going for.
As for "best" place to sell. obviously a retail setting is best but if that's your local card show you have to deal with table rent and then hope people who are loooking for what you want actually show up.
Ebay is the best way to reach people who are in your market. Craig's List may be a way to go, but again may never reach the right buyers. -
I have a ton of basketball and baseball cards at my parents house from the late 80s/early 90s. I thought they were worthless, should I go through them all ?

I should look for rookie and special cards right? -
the compaines produced ALOT of cards in this time frame, making many of them worthless, but at the same time you never know what you might find sitting in a box of a ton of cards.
-
Mass production is what destroyed the value of cards in the 80's to mid 90's. Who gives a shit about a Griffey UD rookie card when there were millions made and still around today.
