General Barry McCaffrey, who served as drug czar under President Bill Clinton from 1996 to 2001, was asked about marijuana legalization at a February 23 panel discussion of the Council on Foreign Relations. The panels focus was primarily on US/Mexican relations, particularly during this period of intense prohibition-related violence. McCaffrey indicated that now that he has left public life he could admit that he did not care about adult marijuana use.
McCaffrey told the panel

There's a 10-minute answer, there's an hour answer, there's a three-day answer. And, fortunately, since I'm not in public life, I actually don't care. I care about 6th graders through 12th graders. If you're 40 years old, and you're living in Oregon, and you have 12 giant pot plants in the back of your log cabin, knock yourself out.
What an outrage-when he was in a position to do something about it, he bit his tounge, and arrested millions for doing something he doesn't give a shit about. He should be tarred and feathered !!!!!

ummm Pm the liberal democrat who when he finally opened a bread and breakfast business with his daughter, he realized the liberals are stupid with the amount of forms and bs he had to fillout for taxes etc. As they say liberals are liberals till they grow up and see the world.

Here's my all-inclusive, in-depth, unbiased, comprehensive, scientific analysis of the US governments' so-called War on Drugs:

oh man what a jerk

some people are actually able to do thier job while not becoming emotionaly attached to it.
Thats like getting mad at a retired cop for not pulling over drunk drivers anymore. -
maybe he changed his mind since leaving his position?
-
seriously who really does care about pot...as long as its not in the hands of kids, its not hurting anyone. Pot doesnt cause spousal abuse, doesn't cause puking and pissing yourself and looking like an asshole, doesn't cause you to drive 90 down the wrong side of the freeway and take out a family of 4....all it does is cause someone to jam out, play xbox, and destroy a bag of doritos and everyone with half a brain knows this, including Mr. McCaffrey himself

Cleary, you are taking the comment out of context. Why would a retired czar care about people smoking pot. He did his job, and now is retired. Is he supposed to drive around and just randomly bust people for smoking pot even though thats not his job anymore? Here you guy if it makes you feel better
Thats like an retired cop pulling people over for speeding. -
He was a total prick about it when interviewed on 60 minutes a few years back. Politics aside, if you don't believe in the 'war' & are placed in charge of the offensive you should offer up another plan of action (even a behind the scenes private one). I truly believe most level headed Americans can separate marijuana & alcohol from other hardcore drugs without any classification of "medical" in the title.

He was just doing his job.
