She probably had HIV when she slept with Forrest, and its shown that they only have se once, its unlikely he contracted it. She could have still had HIV when she had the kid, and the kid would not have contracted it. After the sons birth it probably went into full blown aids and in the 80's when it takes place there was not alot known about the diease. She may not have even known she had AIDs so never really got the treatement she needed so it killed her faster than it would for someone living in todays world.
