  1. Was at dinner last night with a few buddies when one of them recognizes this girls roommate he used to bang. He got really irratated when he saw her and completely changed his demeanor. He told me that she works at the Special Victims Burn Unit here in Houston and she and her co-workers bet on who is going to die first.

    Funny, Normal or Disturbing?

I personally find it really fucked up and disturbing
  2. me too, his actions are weird

edit: oh, her. normal, under the circumstances aka what el burro said.

  3. Probably normal for people who work in those places. Still fucked up though.
  4. Lots of people in jobs like that tend to develop a morbid sense of humor. It isn't because they have no heart, it's because their jobs would be unbearably soul-crushing if they had no outlet to lighten up their day-to-day. If you tried to empathize for every victim all day every day, you could never survive it emotionally.

    Normal.
  5. normal.
  6. i worked at hennepin county medical center in downtown mpls for a few years as an electrician, and i can tell you that the burn unit is one of the saddest places in the hospital to go to. its fucked up to see kids and everyone else in so much pain and all wrapped up in bandages, and i have heard it is a very painful recovery. so yeah i would say its very disturbing.

  7. You totally have to have a fucked up sense of humor to deal with that all the time, If they are saying things like "I hope so and so dies first so I can win the death pool" then it is completely fucked up
  8. 1. work in burn unit
    2. make LL bets
    3. ??? aka "accidentally" unplug machines

  9. not funny asshole these are people's lives.

Becoming desensitized to such things is fine, or possibly ideal in a line of work such as this. But betting on the outcome of people lives is just so unprofessional and disgusting (especially in this situation). Sorry dude, but this is not normal. You don't have to empathize, but there's some sort of median here that a professional needs to strive towards, and actions such as the OP described stray far to the wrong side of it.

Fml if im getting levelled here, I'm going to bed.

I see where you are coming from, and I don't entirely disagree. From the outside looking in, it is unprofessional, disgusting and a bit shocking. However, I have never been on the inside. It's tough for me to judge someone for wanting to distance themselves psychologically from the pain, suffering and death that they are surrounded by every workday.

I seriously doubt they are cheering or swearing at every flatline and yelling things like "202 croaked at lunch! Pay up, motherfucker!".
  19. Absolutely normal. Not everyone that works in these type of jobs has developed this morbid sense of humor, but it is a legit defense mechanism, seeing this type of horrid pain day after day. We had LL bets in chemo groups, guess who scooped that pot?
I couldn't imagine burn units, it is by far way way way more tramatic and devastating than any form of cancer imho.
  20. funny AND normal.

its been said, you CANNOT care about death and do that job. it just doesnt work

    not sure if serious...
  21. Very serious. Ever burn your finger? Imagine that times 892727209820990679 every nerve is gone, it's horrific. I'll take my 3 years of intense chemo over a life threatening burn anytime.
  22. Agree with 323.
  23. Normal.

I knew a Nurse who worked in a Burn unit , They used to call the patients "the crispy critters "
  25. I think it is weird but without humor it would be unbearable.

Related story concerning humor. My sister was kidnapped and help in handcuffs for 48 hours when she was about 22. When she got away and back to my mom's house she was telling what happened and said "well, there goes that fantasy of being handcuffed." and laughed. Sometimes humor is the only thing that can get you through a situation.

gotta be one of the sickest brags ever, wp
  27. having a sense of humor is one thing, placing bets on who's going to die first in a burn unit is fucked up. that's fucking whacked.

Reason: some little philly break your heart?
  28. I dont think its as much of a sense of humor as a coping mechanism. Sick and twisted for sure, but I can't even pretend like I know what it would be like to work in that sort of environment so I'm not going to pass any judgment.
