  1. Interesting new report that came out today by the Global Commission on Drug Policy.

    Link to USA Today article.

Among the reports suggestions for tackling the problem:
    • End the criminalization, marginalization and stigmatization of people who use drugs but who do no harm to others.
    • Challenge rather than reinforce common misconceptions about drug markets, drug use and drug dependence.
    • Encourage experimentation by governments with models of legal regulation of drugs to undermine the power of organized crime and safeguard the health and security of their citizens. This recommendation applies especially to cannabis, but we also encourage other experiments in decriminalization and legal regulation that can accomplish these objectives and provide models for others.
    • Offers health and treatment services to those in need.
    • Replace drug policies and strategies driven by ideology and political convenience with fiscally responsible policies and strategies grounded in science, health, security and human rights and adopt appropriate criteria for their evaluation.
    • Invest in activities that can both prevent young people from taking drugs in the first place and also prevent those who do use drugs from developing more serious problems. Eschew simplistic 'just say no' messages and 'zero tolerance' policies in favor of educational efforts grounded in credible information and prevention programs that focus on social skills and peer influences.
    Thoughts?
  2. Miss Lippy's car... is green.
  3. Makes sense, but won't happen in the US. Too many jobs depend on the War on Drugs. DEA, courts, local police, prison employees and small towns with large prisons would be hammered (presuming a large portion of the local population is employed by the prison), not to mention plenty of others I'm not thinking of.

I would also venture to guess that the (private) prison industry has a pretty strong lobby. That industry would be destroyed if decriminalization came to be.
  4. unfortunately it is so much easier to keep doing the same thing, then it is to make a drastic change in behavior.

  5. In so many ways, the federal government embraces some of the most repressive and ignorant policies to be found anywhere in the entire civilized world. The war on drugs is certainly one of them.
  6. It's Bush's fault

  7. preach on it son. werd!

  9. Don't worry. Rick Scott has a plan.
  10. we enjoy being a nanny state too much for anything like this to change...no matter what the evidence is

  11. Listen, it's a great idea, if you believe people can take drugs in moderation.

    "What about prescription drugs!!!"

They are also given out too loosely, especially pain killers and should further be restricted. Sprained ankle? Here's some naproxen and hydrocodone.

Aww you feel a little anxious around people you don't know? Here's some xanax.

Got the sniffles? Here's a z-pack, and some amoxicillian.

    Bah.

  12. I think they're spot on, but the US won't listen for reasons stated previously in this thread - pretty pathetic imo
  13. prohibition doesn't work so well? no one saw that coming dot dot dot ,,, ### !!! @@@ &&& %%%
  14. "the global war on drugs has failed"

perhaps, but the US war on drugs has been a huge success.
  15. Every year more old people die(highest anti drug contingent) and younger people(typically highest pro drug use) get to the age to vote. Only a matter of time until it becomes a forefront national issue prolly less than ten years.

Nationally medical marijuana has high support and more and more conservative states are voting for medicinal use, Oklahoma comes to mind, and the crap politicians that are ignoring what the people say as also in Oklahoma is going to bite them in the ass. I would venture to say it is a primary reason Obama said ignore the medical states and don't do shit against them.

For straight legalization I believe I saw on here or somewhere where nationally it's running almost fifty fifty. Where as between 78 and 2000 it was running only in the mid 20s.

It really shouldn't be to much longer for the issue to be confronted when the people say stfu we elected you now pass the shit. I would bet in either 2012 or 2014 we will see the first state go for full legalization and regulation in either Nevada or california.

(Except for when me and your mom had you.)
  20. All research and successful drug policy shows
    That treatment should be increased,
    And law enforcement decreased,
    While abolishing mandatory minimum sentences

Utilizing drugs to pay for secret wars around the world,
Drugs are now your global policy,
    Now you police the globe,

I buy my crack, my smack, my bitch,
    Right here in Hollywood,

Drug money is used to rig elections,
    And train brutal corporate sponsored
    Dictators around the world.

They're trying to build a prison!

    Hey Mike:
You know we've been noticing you've been having a lot of problems lately.
You know, maybe you should get away and maybe you should talk about it, maybe you'll feel a lot better

    And I'm all like:
Oh nah it's ok you know I'll figure it out, just leave me alone I'll figure it out.
You know I'm just working on it by myself.
