Hey OT, I'm looking to buy some golf clubs. I'm a golf noob....
3 questions :
Is Buying golf clubs online a good idea (financially and play wise)?
If yes, then where's a good place to buy them?
Should I look at buying used clubs? -
I was also considering this. I never golfed and thought it looked boring, but now that Im getting old and boring Im starting to find it interesting. And it sounds like a good way to get drunk with your friends.
-
I had some success buying clubs on ebay (Pings) at a great price and have been using them for years.
-
good thread resilient, so you think I should get custom fit locally... but that tends to be a bit too expensive for my taste, and that advice looked like it was geared to a 9 handicap... I'm looking for something more in the range of advice for a 40+ handicap.
I could see once I have a well developed swing, and am somewhere in the neighborhood of consistency, how custom fitting might benefit me... but at this time, my swing is so wildly inconsistent, I'm not sure custom fitting would be the way to go (both price wise and consistency wise)
I've looked there a little bit. Were the pings you bought new or used? -
yeah, you're probably fine getting a deal on the internet... but also consider going to the discount golf stores and looking at their used club inventory. You can get those even cheaper and you will be able to see how it looks and feels in person.
-
Buying on ebay is fine, just make sure you're dealing with a reputable seller. Some of the fakes on the big name brands are at times perfect looking.
To check if a sellers legit, type in the sellers name in a google search followed by the words golfwrx. That forum usually will get you on the right track when dealing with sellers/stores. -
Go and demo the clubs that you look at. If you're completely new o golf you'll probably want clubs that are classes as "game improvement" or "super game improvement"
When you demo the clubs you can have the shop measure you up to see if you can get away with off the shelf. I was able to get measure for the wilsons i got 7 years ago and they were perfect from std (these particular range are +1inch shafts anyway)
Cliffs:
Demo lots of clubs
Get measured by an independent club fitter (get the measurements you need for shaft length)
Buy from the place with the best $$ and product support. You might get a god deal on clubs at one place, some will charge more for clubs and discount the shit out of bags, shoes, balls, etc...
Not sure about where to buy from, but I've looked at rockbottomgolf.com their prices seem pretty good compared to retail, but they have a limited range. -
rockbottomgolf.com, great prices and 3-4 day delivery.
-
you can go any sports store locally now and they have a decent selection of golf clubs.
In canada Golf Town is your best selection and price market.
A +40 handicap, you're looking for high high high forgiveness, so you definately want cavity back irons and make sure your set includes a 4 and 5 hybrid, maybe even a 6 (instead of the 4 5 6 irons). If you're looking for something cheap just to get into the game, let the sales people know this upfront. Tell them you are just new to golf, need lots of forgiveness (cavity back) and just want a decent set of clubs to get your confidence up to enjoy the game. They will usually have something from the prior year (s) laying around in the back that you don't see on the shelves, and you'll get it at around $200 cheaper than anything you see.
Everything is maxxed out technology wise, so buying a year or 2 back for irons isn't a bad idea if you're looking to save money. Make sure you demo at least 5 or 6 sets of irons that look appealing to your eyes and then narrow it down from there. You can't hit a shot if you're not already confident over the ball.
Good luck, and welcome to this amazing game. If you need any other help, feel free to pm me with a list of clubs you've narrowed it down to. -
I just put together an entire new set buying all clubs off eBay for MUCH cheaper than I could have in any store. I bought a couple clubs from Rock Bottom and there are a few other golf discount stores on eBay as well.
Don't buy used. You can get an awesome deal for new clubs online. Started building my set about 2 years ago - bought a set of Callaway x-18 irons for $400, TaylorMade Burner driver for $100, and Cleveland CG-11 54- and 60-degree wedges for $80 for the pair. Only club I bought in store was my Ping Karsten series putter because I tried every putter in a few stores before I knew what I wanted and I couldn't find it any cheaper online.
So to your three questions:
1. yes online is good
2. eBay, rockbottomgolf - you should find everything you'd ever want between the two
3. Buy new. There are plenty of deals on new clubs online where you won't save much by buying a club that you dont know how many times its been hit.
Also, don't feel like you need to buy the newest series of clubs. I bought the Burner driver that was the two years older model but I hit it much better when I demo'd both at the local driving range. Also, the guy at one golf store told me as I was looking at the x-18s and x-20s trying to figure out the difference, and he said the clubs are identical as I thought. Same thing happened with their newer models the x-22s.
Also, if you're looking for a bag, the Callaway Warbird bag is amazing. -
Thanks for the advice everyone. I just cashed out 5 hundo from stars, so I'm going to use that to buy some clubs. I'll probably go look here locally, as many of you suggested, find what I like, and then see if I can find it cheaper online.
-
You'll get off to a much better start in your golfing future if you find some less expensive clubs and spend at least $200 of that on some lessons to begin with.

Thanks C_Bomb. I went and did just that today. apparently I need -1/4 to 1/2 inch on the shaft and a 2 degree flatter lie angle on the club. I'm short like BGX, so I guess that's why. He let me swing a Ping G10 Orange Dot (-2 degree lie) that was a 1/2 inch shorter, and it felt great. The club he let me swing was a discontinued model, and the ones that replaced it were $850. I've got about $600 to spend, so I've gotta find some irons that are a little cheaper, because I need a driver too. I looked on Ebay for G10 Orange dots and all they had was 7 irons... meh.

I just started this year... my goal was to start with $300 out of pocket for equipment and then buy a new club every online tourney ship or so.
Most of my clubs were new, but I grinded eBay (also looks like you can get reasonable stuff on craigslist, then again I have no qualms about used when I first start a hobby in case I don't use the stuff nearly as much as I thought) and local stores and here's what I did.
Irons- bought a set of new Orlimar irons for $60 shipped instead of $200 because it was missing the 8 iron (still don't have)... I have 4,5,6,7,9,P,GW and that's been plenty.
Hybrid- Used full tilt points to get their hybrid and golf towel, showed up in a week, club seems fine...
3 Wood: Brand new Nike SQ Dymo2, being cleared out of lots of places for $99 now. I also, at the encouragement of friends, used this as my driver for the first couple months. If I ever actually pay for a lesson to learn how to not slice every shot 800 miles to the right, rather than listen to my friend's incomprehensible explanation of what I'm doing wrong over and over in increasingly loud assholish tones, this club will be awesome.
Driver: Bought a used Nike Sumo for $40. Was unaware at the time that it being a 16 degree driver made it for old people and pussies, and hit the ball farther with the 3 wood anyways. Is in the trunk of my car waiting for a Play It Again sports to show up.
Putter: Used Nike Oz Blue Chip, $25. I fucking love this putter. It's several years old but putting is usually the best part of my game and I feel like I have a lot more control with this thing than with friends' putters. I have been looking at a blade.

Bag: I bought a stand bag new for $45. It's completely homo, featuring such high technology as a pocket to store your valuables which is carefully and hilariously labeled "Valuables Pocket," a "Cool Zone," and well pretty much everything else you expect when you buy at low-end stores to save money. It holds all my clubs, beer, rainboat, random golf equipment, and more.
Have since purchased Nike Str8Fit Driver, which is pretty awesome. Got insane price of $139 delivered and it's legit. Next up is 8 iron, then maybe a 5 wood or a sexy wedge or 2.
Rather than start a new thread, I'll ask a question for OT golf savants and hope to get an answer or 3:
Anyone have any thoughts on Brush Tees? We had a walkon join our threesome last month and he played with these and said it had really helped straighten out his drives. I picked up a pack but haven't played much aside from Par 3s lately so haven't really used them... -
I found some of those for sale here -> http://www.pinemeadowgolf.com/golf-c...ools.brushtees

The reviews on them seem pretty good, but you're probably right, it's just mental. According to the description :
Conforms to R&A and USGA Rulings
The Brush Tees allow you to launch your drives without resistance or deflection and gain up to 7 additional yards without having to change equipment.
The innovative Brush-T allows you to tee your ball on flexible synthetic bristles that bend on impact, creating a feel of driving the ball off the air. These bristles provide significantly less resistance which produces dramatically longer and straighter drives.
On an unrelated note, I did a lot of research today and settled on buying some irons from Giga Golf. They are the GX922's. Apparently they are Callaway X-22 clones, but I read a lot of reviews and most people were impressed with them. I just bought a single 3 iron, so I can try it out. If that works out well, then I'll buy a set (4i-SW). -
Im sure you can find used x22s for ~300-350 if you just ask the dude at the golf store if he can do any better.

Edited By: Tsupa Jul 25th, 2010 at 04:06 AMYou sure? He wanted $700 for used Ping G10's... He tried to sell me some Bazooka's for $160. Maybe I need to try a different store. The only thing I'm concerned about is that I need a 1-2 degree flat lie. I'm worried about buying used clubs, because if they've previously been adjusted, then another adjustment could break them. Also need a 1/2" shorter on the shaft, which is hard to find on the the used clubs.Originally Posted by buchiYAYO

[edit] www.callawaygolfpreowned.com has the X-22's pre owned starting at $459 (steel shaft) and going up to $679 (graphite) -
Anybody got a golf cart hookup in the midwest. 06-07 club cart or ez go, preferably privately owned and not an old course rental.

Reason: laSer -
I think the brush tees certainly have a couple of nice features. They guarantee the same height for all you tee shots and they're pretty hard to break or lose. For the latter reason, I like to use one when I'm practicing since I can get one solidly in the ground and just keep using it without having to keep re-teeing. Used them off and on for actual play, and can't really make any claims as to any performance enhancement, but as several have stated, if you can get a little mental advantage thinking your ball will go a little farther and straighter, it might just do so.
-
You were concerned that brush tees were illegal, so figured you'd care that laser range finders are illegal.

Dicks Sporting Goods has new x18 irons for $263 or something like that right now, as well if they have r-7's from Taylormade, they will be the same price. They can do all the work to make them - 1/2 and 2 degrees flat at the store. You can also get a nice 07 Taylormade Burner Driver for $129.99 or a 09 Burner for $149.99.

Reason: my spelling blows -
Its been a while since i spoke to a club maker, but i was sure the last time i asked he said that you couldn't take cast clubs more than .5 or 1 degree either way. Not sure what those clubs you were looking are, but maybe get a second opinion on clubs and measurements?
If i had my time again, I'd definitely get rid of my long irons and get hybrids earlier. When I started I couldn't hit a straight drive but my 3 iron was solid gold. Worked on my drive and lost the 3, 4and a lot of 5 iron shots.
Stuck with the original driver for 6 years of pain (no $$ to spend on golf clubs) but just got a second hand Callaway FT-3 with draw face and 2.5 longer shaft than my other and its beautiful.
Someone mentioned lessons and I couldn't agree more, but there is no point spending $300 now on clubs and wanting to spend another $6-900 in a year when $500 now and you'll still be happy in 3-4 years.
I'd definitely get 3-4 lesson now. That way you'll get the most out of your clubs and learn good techniques early.
