Was on the highway on Thursday morning going to class at 9 am during pretty crappy weather. Was going what I thought was a safe speed but I hit some black ice in the far left lane, ended up fishtailing across the highway and then smashing into a guardrail on the right side. Pretty f scary figuring I was going 55-60 when I hit the ice. No real injuries though other than a little bit of whiplash, also didnt hit anyone else which was pretty sick.
Anyways now I have to get a new car cause obviously my Buick is gone. I've been looking for cheaper but not too cheap options (something like 5k-8k). Anyways I've found a ton of Cobalts in that price range. In general are they pretty solid? I'm kind of a car noob but according to the blue book price this specific one was worth ~8k and its listed currently at 6.5k with a clean carfax listing.
I'm pretty much looking for something that will be pretty durable and I can run some miles up on. -
i'd go with a toyota camry or corolla. anywhere from '95-'00. things will last to 200k or more miles easily, and not require much maintenance.

also cobalt's are real small inside. can't tell what kind of buick you had, but if it was a buick it was probably pretty big. would be a big step down in size. -
go from a buick to a cadillac, holla

Going 55-60 (which is probably an estimation from you) is fucking crazy with how the roads look. I use to live in Idaho and MN and with the way the road looks in your pictures, no way in hell Im driving that fast.
Now about a car replacement.. camry or honda will do. Both are excellent cars and as someone already said, maintain their resale value good. -
Yeah in hindsight it was too fast. Didn't really realize it because at the time I keeping a steady speed with the flow of traffic. I mean it was only like 4-5 other cars at the time but it felt okay. Def learned my lesson though for sure

for 5 to 8k you should look at a ford fusion or corolla depending on how much room you want. Both quality cars within your price range if you get an older model
-
You're gonna see a lot of cobalts and G6's in this price range but stay away (lots of problems with this series of cars). Tbh if you dont care what your car looks like go with Buick again. Grandpa cars ftw, comfortable ride and highly reliable. Obviously honda is the #1 choice but your choices will be limited if your budget is under 10k. gl
-
maybe get something with all wheel drive
-
maybe an older subaru, they are super reliable and they have 4wd, which may be a good thing for you.
-
Size of the car doesn't matter to me much. I was driving a Lesabre before, it basically doubled as a boat. But I'll def start looking into some of the mentioned types.
How important is a clean Carfax? I'm 99% shopping with dealers and I'm not sure how important those are. -
Subarus use AWD, rather than 4WD. I cannot, atm, remember the difference, but there IS a difference.
-
you are right its awd. i believe awd is all the time and 4wd means you can choose between 2wd or 4wd
-
Sad day for Buicks. As mine was parked on the street and someone took the side mirror off.
LOL@worrying about his new car holding its value - he's buying a 5-8k vehicle, he's gonna drive it until it shits out, resale value will not matter -
I've been looking through a few things, found a 2000 Infiniti I30 at a dealership that I have extended family at. Any thoughts on Infiniti? Still looking for good deals on the a fore mentioned cars.
-
I'm guessing you just hit snow, not black ice.
go with something jappy. -
Uhhh, big three cars are way cheaper round these parts. Tauruses are super cheap. Go up to flint and find a nice one.
-
I have a 2001 infiniti i30. It has traction control and ABS and is pretty good in the snow. Ive had no problems in the snow at all.

Only thing is, everything pretty much went bad all at the same time on me. Catalytic converters and the entire exhaust, alternator, struts, ect. Im pretty sure this has more to do with the fact that the person before me did zero maintenance on the damn thing. If the previous owner(s) treated it good... its a nice car. -
I Leased a 09 accord sedan last October $1,800 down $200 a month. This year I see you can lease the same accord for $160 a month. I have the basic LX Accord, no bells and whistles, gets me from point A to B and has A/C along with power windows, CD player etc...

So IMO go with a Honda, 2nd would be Toyota. I owned a Ford Explorer before the Honda, and I'm sorry but now I know why people buy Japanese... They also hold there value very well...
Ohhhhhhh and your crazy driving 55-60 with those road conditions, your usually the guy that passes by me and I say I hope he hits a wall... -
steal new car...keep insurance money...gg
-
ok im just gonna throw it out there that i wouldnt jump straight to a honda or a toyota just because the car is reliable. There is a reason those cars seem to be inexpensive and part of it is because it might as well be made of plastic.
If you even come as close to bumping into someone your car will crumble like an accordion and prob total the car and start your process all over again.
but if you plan to drive smarter than sure those companies make a long lasting car. -
fkn michigan winters and roads (some of the worst in the country)

if u can find an accura in your price range, buy it. You'll love it. Look at the car ads in paper. not many accuras, cuz people keep them forever.
