  1. "In the most blatant sign of government action to reduce the numbers of poor people in New Orleans, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is demolishing thousands of intact public housing apartments. HUD is spending nearly a billion dollars with questionable developers to end up with much less affordable housing. Right after Katrina, HUD Secretary Alphonso Jackson predicted New Orleans was "not going to be as black as it was for a long time, if ever again." He then worked to make that prediction true. "

"United Nations officials recently called for an immediate halt to the demolitions of public housing in New Orleans saying demolition is a violation of human rights and will force predominately black residents into homelessness. "The spiraling costs of private housing and rental units, and in particular the demolition of public housing, puts these communities in further distress, increasing poverty and homelessness," said a joint statement by UN experts in housing and minority issues. "We therefore call on the Federal Government and State and local authorities to immediately halt the demolitions of public housing in New Orleans." Similar calls have been made by Senators Clinton and Obama. Despite these calls, the demolitions continue."

  2. wow the u.n. stepped in and spoke up i gotta say thats damn surprising.
  3. Okay let's say they stop demolishing the low income housing. Where are all the rich white people going to build their condos?

    Geez, think before you post.
  4. hey dyz might want to check this out the top is about to blow

  5. Why don't you think before you post, Quantum? It's a little more than that and assuming the article is correct showsyou how little the United Nations knows about the area. Why shouldpublic housing be built in a hurricane prone bowl, surrounded by waterand that lacks decent public transportation to get out? Yeah, seemsgenius to me, let's rebuild public housing in a bowl for people todrown again and blame it on the government.
  6. Jeez I was just making a dumb joke, in truth I didn't read the actual article. I will post my real response in a couple minutes.
  7. Jeez, busted. Tis okay. =)
  8. Its not about building more housing. They are tearing down perfectly good "low-income" housing to make way for more expensive housing. I would have no problem if market forces had caused this to happen instead of government intervention.

  9. If the government is paying for that low income housing and for the people to live in it, then wouldn't they have the right to say what to do with it? While I'm not a fan of taxation, it is smarter from a business perspective to bring higher income homes that will generate more revenue via property taxes and also reduce the welfare that comes with the lower income homes.
  10. "also reduce the welfare that comes from lower income homes"

So, they are killing the people who used to live there? Damn Bush, you got some balls, I'll give you that.
  11. *Puts on tin-foil hat immediately*
  12. obv lie
  13. Killing?

The city was already changing before Katrina with the most productive people leaving the city and moving to the North Shore or beyond. Katrina just sped up the process.
  14. Well, you act like destroying low-income homes will reduce welfare. The poor people don't just disappear on their own, do they?
  15. They will just go under one of the bridges. Went a couple of weekends ago, it is really bad.
  16. According to the article in the link welfare has been reduced...

"Figures from the Louisiana Department of Social Services show the number of families receiving food stamps in New Orleans has dropped from 46,551 in June of 2005 to 22,768 in January 2008. Welfare numbers are also down. The Louisiana Families Independence Temporary Assistance Program was down from 5764 recipients (mostly children) in July 2005 to 1412 in the latest report."

What sucks is other states had to inherit a longstanding problem from New Orleans after a storm.
  17. More government involvement sux. This is what my smoking ban post is about. If u get a chance give it a read dyz. Would like to hear ur comments on it. It seems like most people on here are in favor of it.
  18. Government doesn't pay for anything and I didn't see anywhere in the article where it said this was subsidized housing. Maybe I missed it.

  20. You missed it and it is. What do you think HUD is? The government has been providing that housing for years.
  21. I still claim that government pays for nothing. Since they do nothing to create wealth, all they do is take wealth from one group and give it to another. That does not mean that government payed for it.

  22. Fair enough and I agree with your point.
  23. Old news about this, imo
