  1. ...is a surprisingly solid January release that I think most of OT would enjoy. Liam Neeson is really good (such an underrated actor) and the film is a brutally intense tale of survival that manages to ask some poignant existential and philosophical questions. That might sound like a pretty weird description - and I admit the trailer is slightly misleading, there's less action than you're led to believe - but it's definitely worth checking out, if only for Neeson and the wolves. The most effective aspect of the movie, for me, was its ability to put you into the shoes of the characters and make you wonder how you'd react and fare in a similar situation. It's quite an uncomfortable viewing experience, which was definitely one of Carnahan's main goals.

EDIT - I actually recommend not watching any of the trailers, which is why I didn't include one in the OP.

EDIT TWO - Wait out the credits, there's a brief final shot at the very end.

Nice, glad you liked it as well. I honestly had my money on the first response hating on the ending, lol. I thought it was perfect, though.

Speaking of which, did you stay until the end of the credits? There's an extremely brief final shot.

  4. The ending was actually kinda predictable, I thought. I liked it.

    Missed the after credits, sigh

  5. I'm glad you said there's not as much action as the trailers portray. A whole movie fighting wolves sounds horrible. Thanks for the review. I'm going to check it out.

Oh yeah, I agree. Not much else would've made sense, given the nature of the rest of the film. Even more predictable was 50% of the audience being visibly rattled and surprised, lol.

I can PM you, if you haven't already Googled it. It doesn't change anything and it's suuuper brief.

Yeah, it's almost more of a chess match than a prolonged battle sequence with wolves.

If you're not into checking out some of the Oscar noms that are still kicking around in theatres, The Grey is by far your best bet right now.

  7. very solid movie. I wasn't expecting much, just action movie kind of thing. I was pleasantly surprised how deep the movie went. I really liked how brutal and vivid the tragedy sequences were - this movie doesn't pull any punches. good job developing liams character is a short period of time. Even though i was mildly annoyed at how capable the character was and how everyone immediately looked to him for answers, he had lots of depth and I got completely lost in the character within 15 min from the crash.
  8. is it based on a true story?
  9. Glad this is getting good reviews. My cousin is a producer on this film /brag.

It's based on a short story called 'Ghost Walker' but no, I don't believe it's based on a true story.

Even better. I'll go read that short story. Not that it really mattered because I'll go see the movie anyway. Thanks.

I can't seem to find it anywhere, and there's very little information on it. I believe the author of the story is a co-screenwriter, so maybe it's not even a published work and they just used it as the concept for the movie. Let me know if you do come across it.

  13. Ian Mackenzie Jeffers is the author. Haven't been able to find it yet though.
  14. kind of surprised to hear it was good, my expectations are quite low based on the trailers I have seen. I agree with Liam Neeson being a good actor. I just prefer him in movies like Schindler's List, Batman Begins, GONY, and Love Actually then I do in movies like Taken, The A Team, Wrath of the Titans and I thought The Grey would fall in the latter group.

  15. I was meant to go see this Friday but couldnt make it. My mate noe wants to go see Chronicle instead this week. Will probably go to both
  16. Going to see this tonight, has good reviews/rating on rottentomatoes.com

I didn't not like Taken, I thought it was entertaining but not much more. My comment was about how I prefer Liam Neeson's acting in roles that offer greater range.

Taken is a bit overrated though. I haven't seen it seen since the theater so it would be pretty tough for me to give a proper critique, but one quick example is I thought the ending scene was totally out of place in that type of movie. tough to take an ordeal like what happened in the movie and wrap it up with a nice cute bow and smile in the end.

EDIT* Also, I saw The Descendants today and loved it. I am big fan of Alexander Payne's films (Sideways, Election, About Schmidt). He writes for the screen so well.

Really enjoyed George Clooney in this too. Even though he still didn't escape "being George Clooney" on screen he brought a lot more depth to this than a lot of his past characters.

I was impressed with Shailene Woodley. I found the depth and vulnerability she brought to the character to be arresting. Pretty disappointed she didn't get a supporting actress nod.

  19. I didn't like Taken much at all, but that's probably not a surprise to anyone who knows me... The ending was stupidly bad... they don't even reference her dead friend as they hug and walk away, if I remember sort of correctly.
  20. don't forget the vocal lessons.

It's absolutely nothing like Taken, except for the fact that he's a badass in both films. Taken is a terrible movie, though.

Based on what I know about your taste, I think you'll enjoy The Grey. The philosophical themes involved aren't going to blow your mind, but the fact that they're there and acknowledged in a film that could've easily excluded and ignored them is enough on its own.

  24. My thoughts:

    The Grey (2012)
    Director - Joe Carnahan
    117 Min; R
    Cast
    Liam Neeson - Ottway
    Dermot Mulroney - Talget
    Various others

The most important thing you should know before seeing this film, contrary to some of the trailers, is that it is not entirely an action movie, with non-stop scenes of men fighting wolves in epic wilderness battles, and thank goodness for that because then we would be stuck with a typical awful Hollywood movie starring the persistent Liam Neeson. Instead, we are given a pretty wonderful existential experience from the perspective of a man who has lost his passion for life. Is it possible he will find his way back while leading a small band of plane crash survivors in the frigid Alaskan wilderness?

Part realistic, part fantasy, when 7 oil field workers find themselves in a hopeless situation after their plane wrecks in a snow storm, they have to figure out a way to work together to survive, though they learn very quickly that they are being stalked by vicious wolves who are, according to Ottway (Neeson) protecting their den and will do so at all costs. Having the most experience with wolves (as a shooter for the oil company) Neeson quickly assumes the leadership position among the survivors, but his goals, as we learn over time, are not simply to be a leader and to solve the problem - this is a man who has internal demons he is forced to confront, whether he wants to or not.

The wonderful aspects of The Grey come from multiple angles. As the title suggests, the film is both bleak in color and tone and we really feel the pain and desolation these men must feel. We also have a tremendous mounting dread of the wolves, out there, waiting and watching, ready to pounce upon their prey - those yellow eyes in the darkness are unrelenting. And then we have the internal conflicts of these men, whom we come to know over the course of the film, especially Ottway. I have to shake my head at a particular scene where the men must cross a ravine from a very high place, but otherwise this is a wonderful surprise to find in February. The ending is quite spectacular if you've been following along and really trying to understand these men, and what transpires (even after the credits role) is not nearly as important as the fact that the ending occurs as it does.

    **** and 1/2 out of 5
  25. Since this alrady got bumped I will just join in agreement that this movie was fantastic. One of my new favs.

Glad you enjoyed it (I figured you would)! Obviously, the ravine scene was a little silly, but I get that they were just trying to mix it up a bit with regards to the obstacles, etc. On the one hand, it seems ridiculous yes; but then I think about 127 Hours and how a dude sawed off his own arm and I realize people are capable of some pretty incredible things when their back is against the wall, so overall it didn't really bother me all that much.

I haven't seen it again yet - though I really want to - but I think it's a film that will hold up fairly well with multiple viewings. It's a long year and there are some big releases slated, but I have a feeling The Grey is still going to be in the conversation come the end of 2012. The more I think about it, the more a like it.
