KBR was fined 402 million for paying bribes to key Nigerian officials to win a lucrative project. The contract was to build a 6 billion dollar gas liquidfication plant in Nigeria. I understand that in a supposed open market this practice is illegal and could have terrible consequences. However, in places like Nigeria and Iraq if you don't pay the right people work won't happen. Sometimes thats a gas plant or a poker tournament in Mexico. Sometimes it's a school or water treatment plant in Iraq. You have to pay to play. I do not think what KBR did is out of line. Just wondering how far off base I am.

So i guess it doesnt matter that people who provide security(us military) are dying everyday so our private contractors can bribe and illegally locked down project bids, and profit in a war zone.

These are american companies who follow the same laws as everyone else.
yay free market! -
The US dealings with the locals in Iraq follow the same path. In order to use local contractors all the people above must be compensated in the correct way accoding to their standing in the community. The people lower on the caste system paid part of the money up the line. Thats how the buisness system works. Whats the difference. Without the infrastructure in place nobody gets anything.

I do not disagree. Part of my job is pursuing Govement contracts. From the EPA to the milliatary and municipal contracts the whole thing seems rigged. The us just made Dickshitz from party poker millions of dollars. That sounded more like a bribe to me than anything. That is why Im saying labling the payouts bribes or calling these actions coruption seems silly. What we consider a free and open market place does not exist here much less anywhere else.

aside from the KBR thing...
as long as there are countries that pay their government employees $1/day and the price of a bread is $1, you're going to get corruption. Say you want to build something in Ghana. In come your ships with equipment and materials. But they can't unload because apparantly some papers are not in order.... stamps missing, signatures not right, know what I mean?
Now here comes a local businessman who knows local laws and customes much better than you do and who offers to be your 'agent' and help out with the paperwork etc. for only a few thousand bucks. Sounds like a great idea to hire this guy as an agent right? Not so fast..... same thing just a different wrapper.
There is NO western company doing business there that can claim that they NEVER make 'facilitating payments'. If they do, they lie. Without facilitating payments you just can't do profitable business there. C'est la vie. -

If you want to have a stinkin' parade in my town, you have to pay.
If you mention blackmail again I'll have your fingers broken.
