I graduated college this past May and am thinking of possibly joining the Air Force or Navy as an officer. I contacted recruiters today and am waiting to hear back to see what they have to say.
My question is this, is there anything that I should know that the recruiter won't tell me? What do I need to consider before making a decision? Is there anything else that I should know? -
One of my best friends did this and got all of his college loans paid off.
Go enlisted Army and you'll go in as an E-4 plus get massive bonuses. Probably not nearly as many incentives for officers. Just an idea. -
^^^^ Exactly
-
air force or a real world job imo... don't do navy, do you really wanna be in a boat with a bunch of dudes for like 6 months at a time? yuck
-
Ring the bell ref, stop the fight.
-
ummm Why don't you try to be a pilot man......thats an option I would go in as a Marine Officer if I was you, with a guart. pilot slot
-
AirForce officer=$$$$$$, great retirement, and great travel, no BS. PM with questions asap.
-
I joined the UB Army. we can dodge bullets baby!
-
Any reason for the Air Force or Navy only? Grow some balls and join the Army or Marine Corps.

I hear the UB Army is helping the US Army create a version of Night Vision Goggles that can see through solid objects.
-
If I had it to do over again, I'd join the Air Force after graduating college.

Starting e-fights?
Apparently we can't have a contrary opinion on here.
When you say you only want to join the Air Force or Navy without any good reason, I just assume that you're a wuss. Maybe I'm wrong, but I doubt it. -
Not sure that you can be commissioned as an officer directly from college unless you take a very specialized branch. The traditional routes to the officer corps are OCS, ROTC, service academy, etc. To qualify for OCS in the Army you have to complete at least 12 months as an enlisted soldier (E4). You can enroll in ROTC and earn a commission while working towards a graduate degree.
What are your career goals? --J -

calling someone a wuss over the internet, oh the irony.
there is a difference between having a "contrary opinion" and telling someone to grow balls and calling them a wuss
maybe I want to join the air force or navy because they are more based on intelligence/technology, which has to do with my college degree, and would be important in deciding what I want to do for a career. -
So everyone who calls people a wuss over the internet must be a wuss himself? Huh?

Also, you obviously know nothing about this stuff. lol at them being more based on intelligence and technology. The Army is the largest service and has a much more diverse selection of intelligence positions than the others.
If you want to be a desk jockey, just say it. Or, just join the Navy and be surrounded by seamen all day. -
The point being made is that it takes a very big man to call somebody names when they don't have to show their face.

I probably don't want to join the Army because they've dicked over a few friends of mine, and I have heard nothing but good things about air force and navy. but I guess whatever you say is true b/c you obviously know me inside and out -
Understandable. But, all the services have crooks in the recruiter's office. The key is finding a straight shooter.
Don't judge the entire service because of a few assholes. -
kind of like how you stereotyped me as a wuss because I asked for info on the AirForce and Navy?
-
?? non sequitur.
I assumed you were a wuss because you didn't even consider the Marine Corps or Army. That is very wuss-like, especially when you obviously are lacking a ton of information about each service. You are ruling out a potentially great opportunity by not even considering those two services in your thought-process. -
yeah I haven't considered them
I've had recruiters from the Marines at my house and I have friends in the Army, not interested in either. I guess that obv makes me a wuss -
- Recruiters lie like mtf'ers so take everything they say with a grain of salt. They're concerned about getting quotas etc so really do your research.
- Become an officer, over the long run it's the only way to go. Enlisting is fine an all but the quality of life etc is much better as an officer. Pay/benefits and all that.
-Airforce for sure as waco said on a boat with all dudes for 6 months tours blows. Not like NOrth Dakota is any better though.
- I have a few friends that have done this/are doing this and really enjoy the military lifestyle.

The Air Force is the closest to having a "regular" life of all branches, depending on your job of course. Many people(officers and enlisted) work 8-4 jobs M-F. Of course not all jobs are like this, but you can certainly pick a field where this is the most likely. All fields are subject to deployment but something in the administrative or finance would offer a good chance of a normal life. I have a lot of friends that are both officer and enlisted that are still on active duty.
I was in the Air force(enlisted) and my first job I worked 6-10 am M-F. On rare occasions I would have to work a full day(until about 2 pm lol)
Good luck with your decision and PM me if you have any questions. -
yahtzee, what branch did you/do you serve for?
-
Contact your local Air National Guard units. Apply for a pilot slot with them. If you can get into a guard unit they will ship you to flight school and its the best fvcking part time job you will ever have.
