I was cleaning around my computer desk and unplugged my modem for a minute and now I can't get back on the internet. I'm going on four hours now of googling but can't find a solution that works. Any ideas? $20 to someone that can't help me get this going by tonight.
My modem is connected through a Dlink wireless router...but it doesn't work when its connected directly to computer either. -
whoa joe

what did you unplug it from?
And in all seriousness... turn off all computer components. Router, modem, and computer. Then turn them back on in this order. Modem (wait for it to completely come up), router (same), then computer. -
got no clue, sorry brah

ship the $20 to norcaljeff on stars/ftp -
is this a level?
-
Yea, sounds like an odd situation.
-
I'm as confused as you guys. Ive obviously tried powering everything down...so aggravating.
-
cmd.exe
ipconfig/flushdns
ipconfig/release
ipconfig/renew -
even if you power down, you still may have to reset the modem at the back (push a pen or pin in the hole and hold for 20 secs).
thats all i can think of -
did you try from the command prompt
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew -
This was one of the first things I tried...I really don't know wtf is going on. Looks like I'll need someone to come by and check it out. -
Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog
Edited By: stevel1017 Jan 4th, 2011 at 01:37 AM
Reset IPv4 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
Reset IPv6 TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
Reboot the machine.
edit do those from the command prompt
if those dont work, grab another NIC, install and check -
Like all my electronics that do not work I throw them against the wall. If that doesn't fix the issue I replace it.
I'm telling you, it's full-proof/fool-proof. -
I'm about two minutes from doing this ha

I tried all the cmd options prior to this post and after I posted again...no luck. Looks like I'll need to have someone come by. Thanks for help...if it somehow works by the end of the night I'll give one of you guys the $20 somehow. -
not sure of your level of noobness but I'm gonna throw this out there anyway. You said it's a wireless setup, so I'm assuming that you are using a laptop or a wireless card in a pc for your primary connection. Probably all of the things you've been told should renew your ip unless of course, you've accidentally connected to a different wireless network due to your haste to get back on line. Other things to check along these lines, do you have a physical wireless switch that was switched off? Do you have a soft (Fn+Fkey) wireless switch that is now off?

Says you physically connected the pc.... what did you connect it to? If you go modem direct to the pc (cat 5 cable, rather than usb please) you can isolate where the problem is. If you get nada from the direct to modem connection, you have either a line problem or a modem problem. If you get a connection, you have a router problem.
It's probably worth noting that some laptops that aren't plugged into AC power, will disable the on board network card (Dell's I know of models that do)... so I would disable the wireless, plug the modem in direct, and do a repair on your local area network, should point you in the right direction...
Sorry so long.
Edit: reread post with TITLE.... obv reading comprehension not so good... so ignore like 79% of that...kthanx -
Reminds me of a time the power went out and the broadcast name for the wireless was changed to "Default".
-
Good news...after dicking around with unplugging and plugging it back in it finally decided to work. I'll hold a contest for the $20 to anyone who attempted to help (sorry norcaljeff). I'll post back in here after the football game with a contest idea.
