hey guys - Im a shitty golfer whos decided to get new clubs - my dads 15 year old ping set sort of sucks these days...anyways I was looking on golfsmith.com for a used set - I need a complete iron set/bag/possibly driver....anyways Im looking to gain some yardage but I also need a set that offers so give when I hit a bad shot (happens alot)....I will spend 4-500 ish if theres a good set. any help?
-
lots of irons offer that forgiveness you are seeking.
Better yet, have you tried to hit any hybrids ever?
There are more qualified to talk about club specs than I am, but basically look for something that isn't a blade and has been made in the last 2 years and you will see/feel better results.
Bought a set of Ping G10s last year on Ebay and am very pleased with their performance. -
Nike sling shots are a cheap, forgiving set irons. ( long irons are hybrid type ) I had these clubs when I was learning, and I played fairly well with them.

Go to a golftown and swing some clubs on the simulator. Try to get a set from a year or two back. Just by doing that you will save yourself upwards of 200 - 600 dollars..depending on how high end you go.
You will want forgiveness, so I would suggest a cavity backed club. Nothing forged or bladed. And as Meuller already stated, try to get a hybrid set, where your 3,4,5, maybe even 6 iron (depending on your skill level) are more of the hybrid makeshift, and the clubs slowly taper off 7 thru wedge.
Do not buy a set of irons/woods without hitting them first. -
agree'd swing a few sets on a simulator to get the best feel, and the most bang for your buck.

The top club is more of the blade style club for lower handicapped golfers with more skill. More precise sweet spot that is smaller and not as forgiving.
The bottom club is a cavity back (the dimple like backing) which is obvious in appearance. The sole of the club will also be greater in width. Larger sweet spot, more forgiving. For a higher handicapped golfer with not as much skill. Good for learners. -
alright - theres a golf shop around here that ill go check out - cavity back is what Ill look for.
-
1. go to the golf store,
2. buy used Irons( CAVITY BACKS AS SAID)/driver and Bag for 300-500 bux.
3. lower score? -
u need club's that are designed for "game improvement." these are gonna be the bigger clunkier looking golf clubs. they offer more forgiveness on off center hits, which will helpo u hit the ball straighter and farther. here a link of golf digest's "hot list" and it should take you directly to the "game improvement" section. its like buying a car tho, u would never buy a car without test drving it.. an important factor for me is the look of the golf club... some just suit your eye better than others so you definitly wanna go try out a couple different sets..

When i was growing up and learning the game, I went from John Letters Blade irons, to Maxfli Revolution Black Dot cavity, tapered golf clubs. New driver and 3 wood, and it immediately dropped 6 strokes off of my game.
Granted I also started taking the game more seriously, however, technology from 10-15 years ago to now is huge. 2 or 3 years ago to today is not very big, which is why I suggested buying a set from previous years to save $$$.
Another tip would be to get a gap and a lob wedge (52, 56, 60 degrees) wedges to fill in the yardage gaps of hitting the awkward 3/4 and 1/2 swing shots. -
you think this makes a huge differance Hos? I have a PW (50) and a LW (60) and nothing in between. I been thinking about ditching the lob for a sw or a cg15. I do struggle in the 100 and in range but am getting pretty good (after ALOT of practice) right around the green with my PW I use my lob out the sand and am just plain horrible out of traps. is it the club or do i just suck?

52 degree for a huge improvement IMO.

how could it make that much more differance than my PW thats a 50 tho? I was thinking 56
-
I use my PW at 100 and in. oBv the 3/4 swing at 80 yards and so on.

Buchi,
I got rid of my 3iron and 4iron. I rock a 4hybrid, and have 4 wedges. PW(49), 52, 56, 60. It does make a huge difference. Allowing your body to simply swing through the ball like it does every other shot, and letting the club do the work will minimize your errors and increase your accuracy. You are obviously still going to have 3/4 and 1/2 swings, but not as frequently, and you will see drastic improvement with your wedge game, after you play a couple rounds, or practice and dial in that yardage.
If you are going to fill in that void, I would reccommend getting someone to change your loft on your PW to 49 degrees. Just my opinion though. It literally takes 4 seconds to do. -
I bought these recently and have been really happy with them.

That site is also really good on prices. Highly recommend it. -
What kinda bounce you got on lob buchi?
