we are on the topic of musicals.
my view: just because there is music/song performed in a film, doesn't make it a musical
opposing view: yeah it does
so please help decide on these 2 particular movies:
That Thing You Do
Walk The Line (they have said that it is because golden globe gave it a nomination for best musical/comedy then it is, or golden globe is retarded - which i was kinda torn on)
thank you -
As BC said:
If the story is told in song it's a musical. If not, then it isn't.
Sweeny Todd - Musical.
That Thing you do? Not a musical. Not even close to one. -
agreed ... a musical is a story told through song ... a movie with good music in it is just a movie with good music
-
I just wanna say that "That Thing You Do" is a very underrated motion picture. I effin love that movie.
-
I have always wanted to ask beki or bluffer does that really live on the same island they do
-
Is it a musical? No. But damn that title song is catchy as hell.
My favorite scene (besides "table 14, your pizza is ready" or whatever they say) is when the song finally hits the radio and they go nuts running through town and dancing around at the furniture store. That feeling of pure elation I have only felt a few times in my life and feeling it again is what I live for. -
i just showed them this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_musicals:_M_to_Z
and they say has no relevance because it is user based
**EDIT** see post below -
a movie about musicians is not a musical
-
This is an exerp from the actual conversation.

Chris says: (4:10:53 PM) ok Heath, walk the line also had MUSIC, but was listed as musical by the Golden Globes Chris says: (4:10:56 PM) so the GG are wrong? Chris says: (4:11:29 PM) or is it possible that a movie listed as MUSIC can also be considered a musicAL by the golden globes Heath says: (4:11:34 PM) so by your deduction, any movie that has music performed makes it a musical Jon says: (4:11:48 PM) no, absolutely not Chris says: (4:11:57 PM) any movie that has music as a huge part of the plot is a musical Jon says: (4:11:58 PM) u know what i'm saying and you're being fucking ridiculous
This post is a horrible representation of our view of a musical vs his.
Heath says: (4:18:05 PM) a musical is when the story is told in song Chris says: (4:18:24 PM) good level Jon says: (4:18:59 PM) musical (noun): a stage, television or film production utilizing popular-style songs - dialogue optional - to either tell a story (book musicals) or showcase the talents of the writers and/or performers (revues).
This is a more accurate representation of the argument. Just to clarify. -
i guess when i think of musical, i think of sweeney todd and chicago and in no way are either of them like That Thing You Do and Walk The Line
-
lol, just saw this, from the wiki link:
That Thing You Do A musical according to Jon Englert, astute film major, and Chris Brown, Golden Globe consultant
Walk The Line, A musical according to Jon Englert, astute film major, and Chris Brown, Golden Globe consultant

The second part of the definition, "revue", makes this tricky. The two films in question featured actors portraying musicians. I think for it to qualify as a musical it has to be either actors telling a story through music OR musicians making a film to promote their music.
walk the line= drama ; Joaquin Phoenix in 8 Mile 2 = Musical
interestingly, I think this would make The Blues Brothers a musical. What do you think?
