I went to see Cansei de Ser Sexy (really cool Brazillian band) in Cambridge tonight (and the fuckers made me miss the warmup bands cause they needed an ID from me to show I was 18... EIGHTEEN! All I had was my expired Jersey license, which I am waiting on until I move at the end of the month before I take care of it. Had to go back to my place, 20 minutes away, to get my passport. Fuckers)
Anyway, hang out with my friends in Cambridge, start walking back to my friend's place around 3am. As we are walking, we see, to our side, a couple trying to haul a mattress and box spring up a very narrow flight of stairs. I look at my friend, ask "Should we help them", and we open the front door and ask if we can help. They say yes, and we help get the mattress up, and get the box spring into their apartment essentially by ourselves, and I know for a fact they would have failed without our help (why they are moving a bed in at 3am... I couldn't tell ya). It was definitely a surprise for them, cause urban living doesn't usually go that way, and they were so thankful for our help. I know that I made two new friends tonight.
I felt really good about helping them, even though my back is fucked up (alcohol and painkillers can make one forget) and I might wind up missing the Million today cause I'll be in traction, but I want to know from OTers...
1. Do you try to help out random people you meet on the streets, and, if so, are people grateful, or kinda weird about it.
2. Do you think sometimes people are meant to be in a place to help each other, like my friend and I were last night, and can I count on some karmic payback for MY move in a few weeks?
Remember, pay it forward. -
yes, grateful in a weird sort of way
no;yes to karma, no to karma on your move
PAY IT FORWARD -
i always help people that are in need. i guess it is because i am an eagle scout and feel it is my duty. when i help someone i dont expect anything in return besides a thank you. some good karma is coming your way soon.
-
I'll randomly pay for someones meal if I see them sitting alone sometimes. About a month ago, I was at wal mart and some girl who was like fucking 8-10yrs old was behind me with a gallon of milk. I told the cashier I'd pay for it and gave her an extra 4 bux. As I was leaving and driving home I got pulled over for speeding and the cop let me go. Karma? I dunno but I like doing shit like that for others.

helping people is +EV

i gotta ask clay, was she asian?
sick sick sick but its quiet here and someone has to lower the standards.
clay is a cool muthafucka man.
------------------------------------
to OP: i think karma only works if you are not doing something hoping for karma to come back to you someday. i could be wrong, i frequently am, especially at ftaments. -
I think you just do things like that because thats the kinda person you are. I never expect anything in return.
-
I'll help people as long as I don't put myself in a situation to get hurt. All I expect is a thank you, a nod, or something to acknowledge that they appreciate what I did. If I don't get that, then I get pissed and lecture them.

i will never help anyone again i have helped people all of my life we ran a christams program for single mothers for years we took 18 under priv kids to disney cost 20k it was fun
we bought cars for widows (or gave titles rather) when you help people it seem to make you an easy mark so since people think that they can just steal from you rather than do things on thier own and trust me the gov WONT help you
so im sorry but fuck helping to any real extent it apperantly means NOTHING IN THE scheme of thing
i would tell the whole story but i would have to post it in bad beats -
i always help people
for example, one time this mommy was carrying like 10 grocery bags by herself and was stopping every few steps to regain energy/grip. I was on my rollerblades so i did 2-3 runs to her house (which really wasnt far). She was very thankful.
I was hoping to get some MIFL action. Damn. -
This old bag of bones left her purse on top of her car at a movie theater one night, I was leaving with a couple of my friends and we were all tripping our nuts off on acid. So the old lady takes off and her purse falls off her roof, we pick it up and chase her down for like 5 miles when we finally get a chance to pull next to her.
So I'm in the passenger seat, fucked out of my mind, and probably looking pretty fucked up as well. So I'm half hanging out the window shouting at her "I have your purse lady" and she looks at me all freaked out and takes off through the red light!
My friend decides he is within his rights as a person doing a good deed and shoots through the red light too. We follow he for about 2 miles when we get to her house I assumedand her husband is standing out there with a baseball bat. He charges our car and looks as if he's about to bash our windshield when he see's me holding his wife's purse out the window or hears us shoutingthat we have her purse.
So we all have a good chuckle and 2 minutes later the cops show up. Appearantly the lady thought we were going to hurt her or were chasing her trying to rob her and she called the cops and then called her husband, LOL. -
Whoa

Helping people always makes me feel better. Even the little things. Just yesterday I helped a guy load like 8 sheets of plywood into his truck in the Home Depot parking lot. Not the most fun thing but I've lugged those sob's myself and know how much I could have used a hand.
-
It's a great feeling when you help someone who truly needs it. I'll do it every chance I get without putting myself in a position to get killed.
Odd, because Pay It Forward is on USA as we speak... -
m' kay just watched the movie but was playin the sunday warm up and flamed how did the kid die? but yes helping others is great
-
Not to ruin it, but he ends up helping a kid that always gets picked on, and gets stabbed by one of the young rebels of the group. He dies paying it forward...
