Hey guys :)
Ess told me there is a giant thread somewhere full of well wishes so thanks.
Jacob has a JPA tumor. It's considered benign but it (rarely) has potential to come back as something more malignant at some point.
Thursday's surgery went well. The surgeon removed the cystic component of the tumor, which reduced the tumor by about 25%. The rest was too vascular and close to the optic nerve and some other important parts of the brain for him to feel comfortable trying to remove more. Next week we begin a 12-18 month chemo regimen and in a few years (who knows where treatments will be then) we will probably attempt radiation to remove it completely, but no radiation can be safely done on such a young kid (Jacob will be 14 months on the 6th).
He had a port put in today that will be used for chemo infusion, a little semi-permanent thing under his skin that allows access to the subclavian artery.
He is, by all accounts and all things considered, doing fantastic. I'm very proud of him already.
I'm kind of in this weird daze still. Mostly I just keep doing everything I think I should be doing and I'm told to do and I keep thinking, "This isn't real. I will wake up from this nightmare soon."
Thank god we are insured. Now to pray Anthony keeps his job in these rough times. I was having trouble logging in so sorry I didn't get an update sooner. Thank you for your love and support... <3 you OT.
edit: a note. My dad is a brain surgeon, so his grandson having a brain tumor has carried a terrible kind of familiarity so far. However, his input, advice and "translation" has been invaluable so far. For all the times I've consulted him on stupid little things that weren't related to his field, I feel even more blessed to have him now.
2nd edit: the port is accessed using a special needle--- known as a "huber needle." been meaning to tell p5s all day :p -
