  1. his "system" has been pretty shitty since nash, its not like its a plug and play system for any pg

calling it 95% the "system" is pretty funny when it hasnt worked in years

fact that hes playing in new york is a huge part of it...theres no way that 98% of the reason that hes this big is because hes asian...if a black dude randomly came in, played lins style of basketball, and turned the biggest market team from missing the playoffs to a contender, he'd be huge...not AS big as lin, but to say not 1% as big seems ridiculous...i think simmons underestimated the asian factor, but you're greatly overestimating it

  3. Who cares if he is getting all this publicity because of his race? He was California player of year in high school and not offered a division one scholarship lol, that was also race. Sometimes race is a factor, it just is. Why do you think Eminem and Tiger got to the crazy level they got to. Obviously both awesome at what they do, but their race was rare to their skill set and this factor took them to crazy levels of popularity

  4. eminem and tiger's race inspired them to work hard and become the best at their professions

    no, he wasn't.

again, the dude got injured late his junior year and verbally committed to harvard before his senior year. it isn't that outrageous that teams backed off. might still be some discrimination, but at least part of the reason why he wasn't as heavily recruited was just because of how his high school career went.

    pretty close, tho:

He was named first-team All-State and Northern California Division II Player of the Year

    also:

Sean Gregory of Time wrote of Lin's zero Division I scholarship offers: "[Lin] was scrawny, but don't doubt that a little racial profiling, intentional or otherwise, contributed to his underrecruitment."[155] Diepenbrock stated, "If [Lin] was African American or Caucasian, it might have been a different deal."[156] Lin said: "I'm not saying top-5 state automatically gets you offers, but I do think (my ethnicity) did affect the way coaches recruited me. I think if I were a different race, I would've been treated differently."[157] Walters added, "People who don't think stereotypes exist are crazy. If [Lin's] white, he's either a good shooter or heady. If he's Asian, he's good at math. We're not taking him."[158]
Diepenbrock said that people without meaning any harm assume since Lin is Asian that he is not a basketball player. The first time Lin went to a Pro-Am game in Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco someone there informed him: "Sorry, sir, there's no volleyball here tonight. It's basketball."[159] During Lin's college career, fewer than 0.5% of men's Division 1 basketball players were Asian-American

Lin himself says it was because he was Asian...

and i don't disagree that race played a role, but i do think that role is being overstated, between people inflating his high school career beyond what it was, ignoring the side factors that influenced his recruitment, and lin's own preferences in choosing a school. i mean the schools he himself targeted were the ivies, cal, stanford, and UCLA, and the only one of those schools that really screwed the pooch by not going hard after lin was stanford.

  9. yea the New York thing is huge---I definitely overlooked that. You could prob take at least 10% of the Asian thing and attribute it to New York (and the Knicks). I just think it's absurd ppl are saying that it's the story of him bouncing around from the d-league/getting cut etc. Obv that plays a role in the bigger scheme of things (makes his story extra-compelling than if he had been highly-recruited) but yea...

In terms of his recruitment, I don't think it was as simple as like a scout saw him and was like "oh he's Asian, dude can't play." Of course not, they're not overt racists or blind. It's just subtle in the back of your head and makes you pick up on flaws (which of course Lin has many of) and wonder how he will translate to the next level of the game. It's the same reason that even if a white guy is super-athletic, most people overlook that and will talk about his gutsiness/hustle, etc etc etc.

I mean, if you read Moneyball (different sport) they talk a lot about how random, subtle stuff comes up so much when you evaluate players/think of them (which is why Beane wanted to develop something more objective). If someone "looks like a ballplayer" it goes a long way in terms of their recruitment/scouting. Why are so many QBs the good-looking, All-American boys? It's not like those guys are more predisposed to having good arms or anything. It's just part of the subtle stereotyping that starts at a young age and sorta carries on every step of the way. It's not necessary to succeed but "looking the part" gives you slight advantages from a very young age.

Finally, my main point wasn't about his recruitment/getting passed around the league...I was just saying the main reason for his hype is his Asian-ness. But dipeslives made a good point---the New York thing is huge. Def accounts for at least 10-20% of the hype.

linsanity is like 96% because he's Asian, 3% because he went to Harvard, and 1% because he went back and forth from the d-league. it's really annoying to hear people to make the case that it's not just because it's uncomfortable to deal with the fact

no, last 5 mins of that half was way worse than first quarter...in first quarter, he had a few turnovers, and seemed to hide a little bit, rather than direct the offense...last part of that half was worst ive seen him...im confident that he'll adjust and have a good second half...chalmers has gotta get a ton of credit for shutting lin down

great 1st half...happy to be down just four...two techs, a ton of turnovers, and worst half lin has played...landry n novak stepping it up
