1. I got deferred from Harvard yesterday; I know most people might say "hey, you still got a chance, you're only deferred" but the chance is really really small (only like 100 kids who are deferred go on to get accepted. And I don't know what else I could have done. I got a 2380 on my SAT (20 points from perfection and higher than harvard's average range for SAT scores), 35 on the ACT (1 point from perfection and higher than harvard's range again), have a 4.786 GPA, ranked number one in my class, take the hardest classes at my school (IB), and am involved in 5-6 clubs most of which I'm President or Vice President of. I even have a community service---I started a tutoring group for the local middle school even. Oh yeah, I also won the National Spelling Bee and AAA National Travel Challenge (two national academic championships)...what more do they want? What more could I have done? It fucking sucks, I didn't guarantee myself admission but I really thought I was going to get in. I got seven other schools I applied to but man I feel like shit. I know that this thread might provoke some GTFOs but whatever, I just had to get this off my chest somewhere.
2. wow that's heartbreak right there. you should be ok though. never worry.
3. At least you can fall back on your champion spelling skills. I hear top notch spellers are pullin in at least 150k/yr these days.
4. but who do you know at harvard? they turn away people without connections. my dad had those kind of stats coming out of college and applying to med school, was valedictorian and everything. harvard was the only school that turned him down. they're snotty.
5. Sounds like you live a very hard life if that's the worst of it

6. brag post?
7. GTFO!!!!! NOW!!!!!!!! NAAA J.K
2380 on my SAT (20 points from perfection and higher than harvard's average range for SAT scores), 35 on the ACT (1 point from perfection and higher than harvard's range again), have a 4.786 GPA

YOU SOUND LIKE UR A GENIUS...FUK HARVARD! I know peeps at harvard they are dik heads! whats other schools u looking at?

my suggestion, go a lil lower and take the full ride...SAVE 200K!! Boston College is a sick school
8. Yale?
9. I guess that's a good point in hyacinth, I don't really know anybody at harvard. My family immigrated here in 1994 so my parents went to college in India so I don't have any family connections or anything. Yeah, Shaaaarrp obviously my life isn't that tough (I think most people who do complain realize that perspective at least they just want to get something off their chests), I didn't say that, I just said it was the worst day of my life so far which has been pretty good so far obviously.

10. I saw your name and assumed it was because you were a Red Sox Fan. I'd be pissed off if I gave $70mil to JD Drew too.
11. hytha made a great point....it IS ALL WHO U KNOW...2 people "i know" parents taught at harvard..BOOOOM 150 LSAT and their at harvard! NOW THATS SO BS if you know anything about law grades....I do more work that those fkers and they gonna be guarnteed 150k in 3 years
12. in all honesty, you don't even want to go to havahd. The people there are stuck on themselves and you can only get in there if you have serious mad assed connections. Go to Wisconsin and party with the rest of us.
13. $$70 million to drew? WTFFFFFFFFFF

And i wonder why these season tickets are out the roof!
HOW MUCH MONEY ARE THEY GONNA b over the payroll cap?
14. Looks like you have to settle for Stanford.
15. the JD Drew signing sucked balls too. God 70 mill for someone who doesn't even care about baseball. What's a good score on the LSAT? A former teacher of mine who's trying to do law now got like a 161 or something and she's not even thinking about places like harvard 'cause that wasn't good enough.

16. DUDE!!! I told you not to send in a pic with your application!!!!!111 why did you??????

17. Sorry to hear that. I am a school administrator and it is not all about what is on paper. It is about who you know, pr and what the school can benefit from you. That is the harsh reality. My suggestion is to work on networking. You need to get to the people that make the decisions.
18. i know someone who went to harvard left high school top 1% of canada
19. FINAL SCORE

affirmative action- 17

fenwayking- 14

gg
20. ahhahaha im glad you didnt get into harvard, you sound like the biggest crybaby in the world, blah blah blah im perfect whats wrong...its called personality....get one and stop sounding like such a douche...btw everything you do in high school is absolutely unimportant the day you graduate...
21. Somone uses that picture for their Poker stars Avatar and it's the only image I have ever blocked while playing or oberserving a table.

Sorry to hear about Harvard man. Just have some faith that they will accept you in the early part of next year and at the same time start figuring out where else you really want to go as it sounds like you have a lot of options.
22. Mook's advice is best here. I had similar numbers coming out of high school, but my family couldn't pay for Ivy League schools, and since they don't offer academic scholarships, I said screw it b/c I didn't want any loans, and wound up getting a small profit coming to Vanderbilt. Unless your family can afford to pay for Harvard, and assuming with those numbers you have full ride offers to other top schools that actually offer academic scholarships (Stanford, Duke, WashU, Northwestern, Vandy), avoid the debt and still get a fantastic degree. Especially if you plan education beyond undergrad, the grad school is a lot more important anyway.

23. thanks for all the support guys it's cheered me up definitely and for some reason I guess I had forgotten how much these schools care about who you know and things like that. hyacinth's point was really good.

24. it's not what you know, it's who you know
25. I would assume Harvard gets many guys like you applying all the time. Undergrad isn't too important anyways. As long as you are in a top five school it really is all the same.

They may have seen something that told them you would not be a good fit for them, who knows.
They are weird like that.

What do you want to major in anyways?
26. Am I the only one wondering if I saw this kid on ESPN?

"I also won the National Spelling Bee"

Was it the Scripps-Howard (?) thingamajig? What year?

C'mon Fenway, out with it!

p.s. great advice here- lots of GREAT schools.

F Harvard
27. I would see if I could get a full ride to Duke or a school like that.. the parties are better, the sports are better, and they are respected as much as Harvard IMO
28. Christine Lombardo obviously.
29. You'll be alright, FenwayKing. I know it sucks, but things happen for a reason.

I had a very good looking application coming out of high school, too. I got into a bunch of top tier schools, but for some reason which escapes me to this day, I got rejected by Penn State!!!!

Like you, I had 99th percentile in all the tests, an excellent GPA, played sports every season, and was very active in all the clubs I was in, including being Student Council President and all that stuff. But still, somehow I was rejected by friggin' Penn State, which was my first choice at the time. I always regretted not calling them to find out why I was rejected, if not just for peace of mind.

As it turns out, I ended up going to what's generally considered an academic powerhouse of a school and earned a much more valuable degree than I would have at PSU.

Like I said, things happen for a reason. You're obviously an extremely bright guy. Make the most out of it and find a school that's a better fit. If you feel like you need to, call Harvard and ask them what happened.

Good luck.
