  1. Earlier this week I got home from the grocery store and was carrying two 35 pound bags of dog food. I shut the door with my foot, but it didnt fully close. It was a windy day and it blew open. Me and the wife took a nap and when we woke up our youngest pit and one of my pugs were gone. I see the front door open and run outside in a panic to try and find them. The pug was just chilling in the front yard, but the pit was nowhere to be seen. We put up signs and have visited the animal shelter every day this week, but she seems to be long gone. I personally think someone took her. She is a great looking dog and extremely friendly to new people. I think she found some family and they kept her. There are also still lots of new houses being built in our neighborhood and even a few on our street so there are lots of construction workers all around who might have snagged her.
Every day a few times a day my wife breaks down and cries . She loved that dog even more than I did. She misses her, but more importantly she wants to know that she is okay. I keep trying to convince her that she is almost 100% with some new family and very happy, but I just can't get her to believe it. She thinks the Lucy either got hit by a car, or is possibly still running around in the cold lost and miserable and will eventually get picked up by animal control and get put to sleep. I must not be saying the right things or maybe there is just nothing I can say right now t comfort her. WHat is your approach?

Fuck I put paragraphs in there, but it isnt showing :(

  2. Sorry dude.

Women aren't logical they are emotional. It is almost certain the dog is with some other family, just keep repeating this.
  3. Check the local chinatown

  4. Tough part is its a Pit Bull, they get a bad rap.

that being said, the dog is fine... buy a new one. It will distract the wife long enough that eventually you will either locate the dog or forget about it as best you can.

Kind of like when someone has a miscarriage, they immediately try to get pregnant again.
  5. I have a chip in my dog so she would be identified if she was taken to a vet or animal shelter and didn't have her collar on. Does she have one of those? If she did, might check to validate the contact information she's registered under.
  6. get her a new dog asap, replace the baww with awww
  7. I think the only thing you can really do is reassure her of how much you believe the dog was taken in by another family, and is more than likely doing just fine.

Unfortunately, as you know, people get attached to their pets. The option of getting a puppy to replace her is on the table (as mentioned above). After a week of looking, I would assume it is what it is at this point.

Oh, and if your dog(s) isn't chipped, you should definitely do that with the one you have now and any in the future. It is well worth the money. I think its like 50 bucks or something, but anytime your dog gets picked up by animal control they will check to see who the dog belongs to before doing anything else. Worth the investment, and I've seen people get their pets back within 24-48 hrs if they are chipped.
  8. Dude this dog has to be around. I would put up pictures on telephone poles offering reward and ads on Craigslist or any other medium to get the word out. i have had a cat gone two years and a dog gone for weeks as a kid. Get on it

She is 6 months old so was about to get fixed and during the surgery she was going to get chipped. We missed that by a couple weeks.

  10. You have to get a new dog unless you want to be stuck with 70 pounds of dog food

  12. Once found my childhood dog after she was gone for about 3 weeks. Was riding with my mom home from school and we saw her running through someone's yard about 2-3 miles from our house. She was skinny and filthy but vet said she was fine.
  13. In before bad parent...
  14. The saddest part of this story is we've seen the pics and know you could easily carry 70 pounds with one arm.
  15. No advice, just good luck sorry to hear :(
  16. I had this happen to me. Was hanging out in the yard with friends and somebody left without closing the gate. My dog ran away and we lost her, was about 13 or 14 years old. Sucked. We also had the sister and mom. Different experience to lose a dog by having it run away.
  17. Uggh...this story makes me sad. Give it more time though. I have hope that if someone else took him in, they might see the posters and feel guilty. Don't go out and buy her a new one.

Since I got my puppy, I'm amazed at how these guys become part of your family. It's almost like losing a child, and the solution isn't "lets have another child".

    Good luck Matt.

  18. have had a dog missing for over two months and it showed up on the grade school playground one day.

have had a cat missing for over 6 weeks and it came home.

have had other cats missing for over a week came home.

don't give up. and assure your wife (as you have been) that the puppy/dog is very likely fine, gl.
  19. Not much advice other than it can take a long time to come home as others have said, but I'm sorry to hear this and am hoping for the best.
  20. Sorry Matt....thats tough.

Maybe ask the construction foreman with a picture and no questions asked with reward if returned.. Give him the back story as well.

The not knowing for both of ya has to be tough.

Well the problem is that I am going to start working offshore in the near future 2 weeks on 2 weeks off so I want to have a dog that will protect my wife and home while I am out of town. Our other pit bull has zero protective instincts so I need to get a new puppy that will grow to be protective as soon as possible. I think the odds of finding Lucy after a week has passed are very low.

I think you're probably right, if you did not have her very long, it might not be likely for her to turn up on her own. If she knows the neighborhood (frequently taken out on walks around the neighborhood) then taking a walk a day on that route would be best bet.

Yeah, I agree your odds are lower, but don't give up man. I assume you've called animal shelters/humaine society. Have you tried online? Make cute posters and spread the word around your city via Facebok. Post an ad in your local paper. Definitely advertise a reward.

If Mr Hi5 can find a chick in Finland...anything is possible. lol

Edit: Also call Vets...if someone found her and is keeping her, good chance they got a check-up to make sure all was good.

Definitely this. Also post them around pet stores, dog parks, vets, etc.

  26. Just litter the area with pics and maybe someone will have seen something. Like someone mentioned, go to the construction sites and ask the workers. Even if u don't talk directly to the person who found him or intentionally took him, maybe you'll come across someone who knows someone who recently got a new pitbull and it will raise their suspicions. You may even come in direct contact with the person and make them feel guilty enough to give u the dog back. All you can personally do is raise the public attention with pics and posters around the neighborhood and pray u catch the attention of the right person. Sucks to hear tho, hope it has a happy ending.

Oh and can't you just teach your wife to shoot a gun or something if you live in that bad of an area where she would need protection

  28. Im pretty sure based on prev pics that Matt does NOT live in a bad area. Just normal concerns for the wife im sure.
  29. Yeah i didn't think so. I also think there's a better chance of her tripping over the dog and falling down the stairs and breaking her neck than having the dog save her in some sort of home invasion.
